Infobox caution[edit]

Hi - I note the warning on Violet's article not to insert an infobox - and I also note that it is probably a good call. As a serial infobox user myself, I would like to know why specifically that call was made (for my own development). I am planning a couple of minor additions to this page to dovetail with a friend of Violet's called Minnie Byron. What intrigues me about Violet is that she and Minnie were about the same age (Minnie was born 1861) but that Violet is clearly much more of a career performer and Minnie more of an opportunist (gold-digger), who was very good at it but appears never to have competed with Violet, partly because they weren't suited to the same kind of roles. I was going to include an image of the two together in a publicity shot from 1882. Geneus01 (talk) 14:47, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. MOS:INFOBOXUSE says: "The use of infoboxes is neither required nor prohibited for any article. Whether to include an infobox, which infobox to include, and which parts of the infobox to use, is determined through discussion and consensus among the editors at each individual article." In this case, the creators of the article did not believe an infobox would be useful, and no WP:CONSENSUS has emerged since then to include one. While sports and politician bios can benefit from infoboxes, most articles in liberal arts fields, as here, do not. See Signpost report: "Infoboxes may be particularly unsuited to liberal arts fields when they repeat information already available in the lead section of the article, are misleading or oversimplify the topic for the reader". Makes sense to me - thanks! Geneus01 (talk) 22:26, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
