M. Vipsanius on Virgil[edit]

You're right, this note turned out to be super long. @P Aculeius: do you think the subject can pass GNG and the stuff split into a separate article? I think it could support an article, based on the controversy and number of sources, but it's probably okay to leave it where it is. I generally try to avoid extended discussions because, like citation templates and external links in the list of members, they can make editing the page much harder—but once in a while won't hurt anything. In either case he still needs to be on this page, roughly where he is now—he seems to be a contemporary of Agrippa, but isn't likely to belong to his parents' generation. Origins[edit]

The first source you mention is already cited for this point in the article, although it could probably stand to be elaborated on. The second source I can only see in snippet view, so you may need to help with it, and I am skeptical about the Vipsanii coming to prominence at Rome before the Augustan era, if they were Venetian or Illyrian. An Etruscan origin seems more likely at this early date, although the fact that Vipsanius and Vipsanus appear to have been interchangeable still supports a more mundane origin, the nomen being derived from a Latin place-name or cognomen. I am not ruling out the alternatives—merely stating that the evidence is far from conclusive. P Aculeius (talk) 23:19, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
