I'd like to see citations that the Vodka Martini has "supplanted" the original Martini in the US. It's news to me. Every time I've ordered a Martini in a bar I've either got something back with gin in it or been asked what kind of gin I would like in it. I agree it's a common variation, but I think the claim it's supplanted the original is a stretch. I'm going to edit it at some point if there are no objections or citations. I live in New York, and since the 1990's every time I've ordered a martini the bartenders always assumed I wanted it with vodka unless I specifically asked for it to be made with gin. I believe vodka has supplanted gin in recent decades as the preferred ingredient in martinis, probably because vodka is neutral-tasting so it mixes better and is more forgiving if the liquor is of cheap quality or if you don't get the temperature or the recipe exactly right. When using gin, making a perfect martini is just slightly less difficult than finding the Holy Grail.

I got to this page as a redirection from "Emergency Protocol 417" when I was trying to find out what that term meant. Nothing on either page indicates why "Emergency Protocol 417" redirects to "Vodka Martini". 23tony (talk) 18:20, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have to say that I think this, honestly, nonsense comes from the Bond movies. A Vodka Martini is a contradiction in terms, really. There is no more such a thing than there is a Whisk(e)y Daquiri, or a Brandy Black Russian. While it is, as the article says, a nice enough drink, per se, it isn't a Martini.85.229.59.113 (talk) 21:39, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dryness?[edit]

Noel Coward, et al, opined that a gin martini had only the barest whiff of vermouth about it. To my 2:1 palate, if you don't like the vermouth, use better vermouth.

Does a similar issue arise for the vodka martini? Is a "dry vodka martini" a thing, or do we simply call that "vodka"? Andy Dingley (talk) 14:38, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
