Order of commercial licenses[edit]

A chronlogical list of commercially licensed television stations in the United States. Dates are when the station received its commercial license (not construction permit):

1. WNBT — New York, NY (July 1, 1941)

1. WCBW — New York, NY (July 1, 1941)

3. WPTZ — Philadelphia, PA (Sept. 16, 1941)

4. WRGB — Schenectady, NY (Feb. 26, 1942)

5. WABD — New York, NY (May 2, 1944)

6. WBKB — Chicago, IL (July 1, 1946)

7. WTTG — Washington, DC (Jan. 3, 1947)

8. KTLA — Los Angeles, CA (Jan. 22, 1947)

9. KSD — St. Louis, MO (Feb. 8, 1947)

10. WWJ — Detroit, MI (March 4, 1947)

11. WNBW — Washington, DC (June 27, 1947)

12. WFIL — Philadelphia, PA (Sept. 13, 1947)

13. WMAL — Washington, DC (Oct. 3, 1947)

14. WMAR — Baltimore, MD (Oct. 27, 1947)

15. WTMJ — Milwaukee, WI (Dec. 3, 1947)

16. WEWS — Cleveland, OH (Dec. 17, 1947)

(Zenith's WTZR in Chicago was on the air with a commercial license on Jan. 31, 1946, although television historian Bob Cooper writes that it was "clearly" an experimental station used for testing of over the air pay television.) — Walloon 08:03, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zenith's WTZR never went on-the-air. The "Phonevision" experiments were over KS2XBS. WTMJ-TV may have been the 15th station to be licensed, but it was the 11th to go on the air. It operated on its construction permit and temorary authorization for some time before it was formally licensed by the FCC. Nitelinger 18:05, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just rechecked my sources (mostly contemporary newspaper accounts), and all 14 of the television stations before WTMJ-TV in the list above were indeed on the air before WTMJ — with regular call letters, not experimental. (And WTZR is not one of those 14.) WTMJ-TV was the 15th commercial station on the air. That is, of course, not counting all the experimentally licensed television stations on the air from 1928 onward. — Walloon 02:56, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just checked, and WTMJ-TV used to claim that they were the 11th, but in their records, which are archived at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee library, I also found a document citing the Codel TV factbook on Early Stations that shows them as the 15th. The list varies slightly from yours, Steve, but the ranking is the same. (Codel showed WMAR-TV on 10/30/1947 and WRGB on 12/01/1947. It did not list WRGB, but I believe my records (elsewhere right now) show your date.Nitelinger 22:03, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Old-WTMJ-TV-Logo.jpg[edit]

Image:Old-WTMJ-TV-Logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Section Added[edit]

I've added a "Former Personalties" section to this article. The first personality I've added is Mike LaPoint. I don't know when he signed on to WTMJ-TV as I'm not from that area. I'm from the area he moved to.--Megamanfan3 (talk) 15:53, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Local Programming in color[edit]

I've gone and removed the claim that WTMJ was broadcasting "all" local programming in color starting in 1956 because it's misleading. They may have, for a short time, been able to have done so, however there exists proof that they were still broadcasting shows in black and white as late as 1965: [1]

- A better illustration of this comes from this TV schedule from the same date as the last link. [2] Local programs such as "Today for Women" and the late night and some weekend news programs do not have the [C] box indicating a color program. I really miss this logo.[edit]

I think they should really bring it back. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/logopedia/images/7/75/WTMJ_Sailboat_4.svg/revision/latest?cb=20200217024055 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.58.230.245 (talk) 16:14, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
