WXYZ

[edit]

The recent rewrite of the WXYZ entry has been a researched and collaborative effort with current and former WXYZ employees and authored by a former WXYZer to give the station the credible entry it deserves. Certain elements including the station’s legal identity, Channel 7 of Detroit Inc, were included for searching criteria on the web. Previous rewrites have given a certain misinterpretation to the events that have already been detailed by those who lived through them at the station. The references and text links are ment to focus on a heavily historied entity from the last 57 plus years. Listing coverage area was ment to present the coverage under certain grades of signal strength. The rewrite has also led to creating at least four other articles culled from pieces of personal, recorded and Wikipedia information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wxyzdan (talkcontribs)

Doppler 7 LIVE RADAR and Doppler 7 VIPER

[edit]

There needs to be a section on their Doppler 7 LIVE RADAR, which was formerly called LIVE Doppler 7000. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.13.37.225 (talk) 19:57, 23 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Dubious entry

[edit]

I just noticed the following...

"Scripps used the station's popularity as leverage for Detroit's cable providers to air the Scripps-owned HGTV cable network. Scripps used the FCC's "retransmission consent" rule to force local cable systems to carry HGTV. Under this rule, a television station that is carried on a cable system under "must carry" rules can request cable systems to compensate the station for carrying it."du

Problem is, Scripps picked this station up in the mid-80s, while HGTV didn't arrive until 1994. WAVY 10 17:22, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its not dubious, essentially Scripps threatened to pull WXYZ off cable if the cable systems didn't also add HGTV. The acquisition date of WXYZ by Scripps and the launch of HGTV are not relevant to that. 108.73.68.108 (talk) 04:43, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tower cam

[edit]

They haven't had a tower cam shot in over a year. I'm gonna remove that info and not list RTN's assignment, until we can get some WP:V on that, because RTN will otherwise probably take 7-3 where the cam was. MMetro (talk) 06:24, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Transmitter Location

[edit]

I realize the coordinates for the transmitter probably come from the FCC database, but if you compare those to 42.470730, -83.249810 in Google Earth, and zoom in to a height of about 500 ft, using which set of coordinates can you see the actual tower (with the building housing the transmitter about 50 feet due north of that) and its shadow? Fair use rationale for Image:Wxyz newscast.JPG

[edit]

Image:Wxyz newscast.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The link to Frank Turner under the "former reporters" section does not link to the right person (it currently links to a musician). Wikipedia needs an article on Turner, who now conducts a ministry on local affiliate WADL-TV. Kevindh71 (talk) 14:53, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Digital subchannels

[edit]

This morning (March 28th, 2008), WXYZ moved its doppler radar to DT3, with DT2 showing its station logo, with instrumental music playing in the background. I think it's safe to say that RTN will be on DT2. RingtailedFoxTalkContribs 12:00, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RTN is a GO! The station was up this morning! RingtailedFoxTalkContribs 12:32, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While TitanTV.com lists four digital subchannels, i have not seen any sub-channels that list a tower camera (which would possibly be on DT4), so until WXYZ resumes it, we should consider TitanTV.com to have out-dated information. RingtailedFoxTalkContribs 17:57, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This afternoon (May 20th, 2010), WXYZ announced that weather will be discontinued on DT3, to make room for what they term a 'mobile TV' service. I'm guessing this is some kind of encrypted subscription service; yet another privatization of the public airwaves. —Preceding unsigned comment added by N8chz (talkcontribs) 22:02, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adding unreferenced entries of former employees to lists containing BLP material

[edit]

Hello, Please do not add unreferenced names as entries to the list of former employees in the article. Not including this type of material in articles abides by current consensus and its inclusion is strongly discouraged in our policies and guidelines. The rationales are as follows:

  1. WP:NOT tells us, Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of information." As that section describes, just because something is true, doesn't necessarily mean the info belongs in Wikipedia.
  2. As per WP:V, we cannot include information in Wikipedia that is not verifiable and sourced.
  3. WP:NLIST tells us that lists included within articles (including people's names) are subject to the same need for references as any other information in the article.
  4. Per WP:BLP, we have to be especially careful about including un-sourced info about living persons.

If you look at articles about companies in general, you will not find mention of previous employees, except in those cases where the employee was particularly notable. Even then, the information is not presented just as a list of names, but is incorporated into the text itself (for example, when a company's article talks about the policies a previous CEO had, or when they mention the discovery/invention of a former engineer/researcher). thanks Deconstructhis (talk) 14:14, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your second sentence reads (in part) "Not including this type of material...is strongly discouraged in our policies and guidelines." I think your intention was to say that including this material is discouraged. --Thomprod (talk) 19:56, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're absolutely right. This was copied and pasted material; which I obviously badly proofread. I'll make that important change in the base copy that I utilize. Thank you for noticing and letting me know. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 20:10, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Former Call Sign Removed

[edit]

WXYZ-TV has never had a previous call sign of anything but WXYZ-TV since it first aired on 9 October 1948. This is documented under the FCC's Query data for previous call signs at this link: "FCC TV Query Results, Former Call Signs". Retrieved 2011-12-14. The call sign WDLT was planned for a proposed Channel 5 in Detroit by WXYZ's former owner King-Trendle in 1947. This reference was made in the 1947 Broadcasting Yearbook. That publication was from the year following King-Trendle's sale of WXYZ to ABC in 1946. That can be sited at this Michiguide page "Michiguide.com, History of Michigan TV Broadcasting". Michigauide.com. 1997. Retrieved 2011-14-12. {{cite web}}: Check date values in: |accessdate= (help). There is also no reference to be found that the original construction permit or license for Detroit's channel 7 allocation was anything but WXYZ. The direct source link listed from the Canadian Communications Foundation did not provide any data on a WDLT. But, another page of text within that website under the CBET's History did site that a WWDT (now WDIV-TV) and a WDLT (that claims it as the current WXYZ) were ready to go on the air in 1947. WXYZ did not go on the air until the last quarter of 1948. However, while the CCF web page has a well listed bibliography it does not use footnotes which makes it difficult to know where this text is referenced from. In addition WXYZ had archived its first on air announcement which has been re-aired in previous station anniversary programs which calls itself "Television Station WXYZ." The video of this can be seen at the WXYZ-TV homepage. Even if it is ever found that the proposed application for Channel 7 in Detroit was submitted as WDLT the resulting ABC television station that took to the air never used those call letters and should not be considered as a former call sign. The link to the former footnote 1 is listed below.

former_callsigns = WDLT (1948) [1]|

Reverend Rideout Controversy

[edit]

https://www.wxyz.com/news/ew-scripps-completes-investigation-into-wxyz-harassment-claims

There was a controversy at WXYZ-TV in 2017 over allegations that Malcolm Maddox and two other staff members were accused of harassment allegations. Note Revered Rideout was named in the allegations for accusing three WXYZ staff but was later suspended from radio over the allegations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.169.130.165 (talk) 19:31, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Former translator

[edit]

In the 1960's, WXYZ-TV seems to have had a translator on channel 29 with a mast at N 41.90867 W 84.99057, according to listings of the Coldwater Daily Reporter from the time on channel 29 with the call letters WXYX-TV. Coldwater at this time got at best fringe reception from ABC affiliates WPTA-TV from Fort Wayne and WSJV-TV from Elkhart from South Bend before the arrival of much-stronger WOTV from Battle Creek which made this translator unnecessary.
