Update needed on programming?[edit]

Apparently WYBC has transitioned its student programming to an Internet radio station, WYBCX (though I've also seen it called WYBC-X or WYBCx). That station's "about us" page alludes to the AM station apparently proving unsuccessful to reaching student listeners (implied as an intent in the acquisition — though what about those concerns back in 1998 about the purchase putting an end to WNHC, which was WYBC-FM's main rival?). This article from last year in The Yale Herald (a student newspaper) also implies that the AM station's previous function was subsumed by WYBCX, and that 1340 was offering "an automated loop", though there's no mention of what that loop consists of (though it could well have been redirection to the WYBCX site) — and of course, since radio stations, large and small, have been known to do anything and everything with little warning, one has to wonder if that loop is still airing. This page from WYBC's January 2010 effort to get members mentions a plan to flip 1340 to news/talk, but I don't know if that came to pass; a loop doesn't exactly indicate a talk format to me, and given the factors that led to WYBCX in the first place and (commercially-run) WYBC-FM's close ties to Cox Radio (which does own talk-formatted WSTC/WNLK, about 40 miles down the Connecticut Turnpike), most likely such a talk format would be professional in nature and feature syndicated programs. (I believe 1340 is still a commercial license, although I don't think there was any advertising during the student-programmed format.)

For what it's worth, there's no silent notifications or requests for remain silent authority in the FCC's CDBS… only a long string of special temporary authority grants (resulting from temporary facilities built to restore service following a April 2007 tower collapse, since WYBC needs to construct a new tower), and apparently Yale Broadcasting Company isn't interested in turning the license back in, so it appears that 1340 remains on the air. But nonetheless, it would be nice to know what WYBC's doing now… (but sadly, if only there were sources for 1340's current programming, — and sources are quite important these days — I might not even need to bring this up… and I'm nowhere near New Haven, so WYBC, as a class C station not even using its full licensed facilities right now, doesn't reach me.) (Of course, there's also this: I have a very funny feeling that at no point was WYBC was full-time adult album alternative. I'm pretty sure it was a typical block-programmed college radio station, with each program following its own format, and it sure seems like WYBCX follows that model as well.) --WCQuidditch 02:15, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess this can be disregarded now… WYBC is now carrying programming provided by Sacred Heart University as of the start of this month, and this is now reflected in the article. While it would still be nice to know what 1340 was airing for the past year, it doesn't sound like much… --WCQuidditch 20:21, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
