Etymology
[edit]@Paora the name here is unrelated (aside from having the same meaning/spelling) from the Henderson Creek name see this: [1]. Traumnovelle (talk) 23:17, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Traumnovelle: According to LINZ the harbour area and creek south of Limeburners Bay was traditionally all called Wai o Pareira. Do you have a copy of Simmons' 1987 book? I'm almost certain "the creek at the place before mentioned" is the report misunderstanding what was written (i.e. meaning "the creek at the place [this book mentioned previously]"). --Prosperosity (talk) 21:49, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- I think you're correct, this entry: [2] also supports that is just an alternate spelling. Maybe the Reed source properly explains it in more detail. Traumnovelle (talk) 23:08, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- I've seen the Reed books - the entries are basically exactly the same as what's on the Gazetteer (so no help there, unfortunately). I'm also pretty sure that this Waipareira Stream was named well after the Waipareira block was established (I'd need to do a deep-dive in old maps for any evidence). - I think the block was named after the stream. Clough's report suggest it does, although it doesn't comment much on the etymology besides citing Simmons. Traumnovelle (talk) 03:49, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
