this is bollocks. 'DD' stands for 'disc drive' in the context of sony's portable cassette machines.

the motor, which is about the same size as a double-A battery, is perpendicular to the capstan shaft & drives the flywheel via an idler in contact with the outer rim of the flywheel, hence 'disc drive'. it says 'disc drive' on the damn case.

in most of these models, traction for driving the spool carriers is derived from the flywheel by gears & (for take-up during playback) magnetic clutch plates.
