Father/Son relationship is not significant

We open with saying he is somebody else's father. That may be true, but that is not the most important thing about him. It's what he personally did that gives him the right to an article. Who his son is can come later. JackofOz 00:59, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

This article should be deleted, Walter's only notabillity is he's Wayne's father. Lots of Hockey Dads (in the 1960's & 1970's) created backyard rinks for their sons. Where's the article on Mario Lemieux's, Bobby Orr's and Gordie Howe's fathers (to name just a few). GoodDay 18:35, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

If anything, this page should be a 'redirect' to Wayne Gretzky. As for being an 'author', my guess is there's alot of authors & publishers out there, who don't have their own Wiki article. GoodDay 18:45, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Counterpoint

Walter Gretzky, besides being the author of two books, has the notability to warrant a film about him, not his son, made and broadcast on the national television network of Canada: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446070/ as well as years and years of volunteer work raising millions of dollars for several charities. When he is cited for this work, he is not cited as being Wayne's father, but as Walter, a figure in his own right.

That does NOT given him wiki-notability. We're not playing a word association game here. Maybe "Wayne Gretzky's father" is the first thing people generally think of when they hear "Walter Gretzky", but that is a different thing from what makes him notable for WP purposes. He was awarded the Order of Canada, but surely not just for being Wayne's father. We have to say in the lede just exactly what it is about Walter that makes him wiki-notable. Proof needed of Polish ancestry

If Gretzky spoke Ukrainian coming out of coma following a stroke, then it is unlikely his ancestry is Polish, but rather, Ukrainian. Why does Phyllis Gretzky get redirected here?

Is she not a separate and equal person from Walter Gretzky? If her name is automatically redirected here, then the article should be about both of them.

Wikipedia articles are created for "notable" people (see WP:NOTE), and walter's coaching and part ownership of the coyotes establishes his notability.. as far as i can tell, phyllis is only notable (insofar as an encyclopedia is concerned..) as being the wife of walter (or possibly, more notably, the mother of wayne). Someone might aswell create a Phyllis Gretzky article. Seems being 'related' to Wayne, give added weight for such a move. It's only a matter of time (see Paulina Gretzky, a great actress, world famous recording artist & world famous model). GoodDay 19:28, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Article Corrections Based on Available Historical Documents

Hello all! The article has based some of its information on secondary sources as to Walter's parentage and ethnicity. According to primary sources found here on the government of Canada Library and Archives Canada:

Anthony Gretzky's WWI Service Record

Some of the information that needs updating includes Walter's father was already married and had a child when he came to Toronto to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in 1917. There are also a number of variations of the GRetzky surname that I suggest be listed as well. I propose to make changes and additions to the article based on these documents. Lord Mayor of Brantford

In 2006, the Brantford City Council appointed Gretzky to the ceremonial position of "Lord Mayor of Brantford". This is not included in the article. Where should I add it? Should the article use Infobox officeholder? I suggest something like this.
