Is there ANY particular reason why this article has money in US dollars? Euros or Pounds but not US Dollars.

  • Yes, probably someone was lazy and used a media source. The contract almost certainly was written in Euros, and if Samuel is getting his pay in US dollars he should sack his agent. Average Earthman 20:34, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There does appear to be some differences in the date of birth given in webpages via Google, however UEFA give the date as the 23rd of March [1], so this looks to be the more authoritative. Average Earthman 13:08, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. I tried to see if any relatively 'official' site had the 22nd instead of the 23rd, both in English and Spanish, but couln't find any. Mariano(t/c) 13:27, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish ethnicity

[edit]

Why doesn't some just ask him whether he is Jewish or not??Barmispain (talk) 16:20, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

¿Are you sure he is a jew? Written by Buena Prensa http:// buenaprensa, blogspot, com

He's not. He was born Walter Luján. --Mariano(t/c) 14:33, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't he Jewish?
here are some internet cites: [2], [3], [4], [5]
--SuperJew (talk) 05:22, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He is Jewish, links were brought for that in the article, one of them being Haaretz, which is one of the most respective pappers in Israel, the second source being the web site Jew or Not Jew, known for it's big research before buplishing stuff. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.67.118.180 (talk) 16:19, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He is NOT Jewish. When he comes onto the pitch he touches the ground and does the sign of a cross, meaning he is a Chrstian. Please take your Israeli propaganda out of here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.210.13.158 (talk) 07:10, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, this could be solved with a little variation:
Walter Samuel is of Jewish ethnicity. Walter Samuel himself stated he is aware of the fact he is Jewish, but that doesn't play a major role in his life.
could just be replaced by:
Walter Samuel comes from a Jewish family. Walter Samuel himself stated he is aware of the fact he has Jewish origins, but that doesn't play a major role in his life.
Would it be satisfactory? So there is also no problem anymore with the understanding of the term ethnicity, at the same time. I don't know whether he is now a Christian or not, by the way.
As an answer to the preceding message, please don't see propaganda all over the place: WS is not an Israeli ; and it shouldn't be a moral case to anyone anyway, but a factual one, to know whether or not WS presents himself as Jewish.
@SuperJew: may I say, it seems to me, your links really can't be considered as serious and reliable: they mention non-documented discussions and rumours precisely about Judaism among soccer players.
Best regards, 82.240.84.38 (talk) 12:49, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are so many fallacies on Walter Samuel being Jewish that I don't know where to start. Let me try:
  • There are no reliable sources that state that his stepfather (from whom he adopted the surname) is actually a Jew.
  • He is not ethnically Jewish; he's surname; there's no Jewish blood in him (Samuel is his stepfather)
  • He is not Jewish but Catholic; as pointed out, he does the cross when he enters the pitch
If there was a reliable source (that is, not a forum entry or a comment to a blog!), the only thing that could be stated is that his stepfather is Jewish, what finally is not all that relevant to his article; mixes religion families are quite common in Argentina.
I'm removing the paragraph on him being Jew in any way. Please discuss the issue here before adding such comments. --Mariano(t/c) 13:39, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. 82.240.84.38 (talk) 13:57, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There have been lists including Samuel as jewish since the last century, but I have never seen any actual reliable evidence that this is the case. The cited sources are nothing more than blog/opinion posts in otherwise respected newspapers. (And one of them lists Samuel's birth name as Locano rather than Luján so it's clear that it was not properly vetted.) Wikipedia guidelines on verifiability state "Several newspapers, magazines, and other news organizations host columns on their web sites that they call blogs. These may be acceptable sources if the writers are professionals, but use them with caution because the blog may not be subject to the news organization's normal fact-checking process." While the Jerusalem Post and Haaretz are generally reliable when their actual news stories are printed, these are not news stories. I found an actual article from an Argentine newspaper -- Olé, the biggest sports daily, which actually interviewed Samuel's mother. In the article, Samuel's mother Gladys "[c]uenta que mira los partidos acompañada por la Virgencita." Translation: she watches her son's games accompanied by a miniature Virgin Mary. I think we can agree that this would be rather uncommon in a Jewish household. Here's the link: La Ciudad Del Muro Unfortunately it's a reprint of an article that was in Olé. Even though the terms "Walter Samuel Firmat" bring up the article in Olé Search Page, when you click on the result the link is broken. Anyway, as mentioned above there is insufficient evidence of his Jewishness, and it was determined above that it was going to be taken out and not to be re-added without discussion, so I'm going to take it out again. Dawindler (talk) 06:32, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For future reference (hopefully will no longer be necessary), a link to the Olé (sports newspaper) article where Samuel's mother says that she watches his games with a Virgin Mary statue La Ciudad Del Muro and a link to an article/interview in El Gráfico with the catholic priest who officiated at Samuel's wedding El Cura de La Selección (The National Team's Priest). A pic from Samuel's wife Cecilia Verhagen's instagram account. Note the cross. I think we can put this issue to bed. Dawindler (talk) 22:17, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

Official Internazionale's website says Firmat, not Laborde. --necronudist (talk) 17:19, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen sources that say that he was born in Laborde, Cordoba but moved to Firmat, Santa Fe when he was around six months old. He was raised in Firmat. I can dig these sources up if this again becomes a source of contention. Dawindler (talk) 20:26, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

National team

[edit]

Anybody knows why he is not playing for Argentina anymore. (Oh, but he is!!!Barmispain (talk) 16:23, 12 June 2010 (UTC) I understand he is injured now and was not picked by Pekerman for World Cup 2006. But why he has never picked by Basile? or is he retired from international football? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kurucesmeli (talkcontribs) 22:14, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish passport

[edit]
