I thought what is more commonly called the "water festival" (bon om tuk in Khmer) usually takes place in November? for example, see Public holidays in Cambodia

the current "water festival" article initially states in the first sentence, that these festivities (which usually include boat races) usually take place in November, not on the April new year. I believe it is thus separate and distinct from the "water throwing" traditions that are part of new year celebrations.

STRONGLY agree with the comment. Cos as a Cambodian, I was confused when I first read this article - Cambodian Water Festival 'Bon Om Tuk' is a separate event from the New Year's Day shared by Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. It happens every year around November based on lunar calendar.

I added an explanation about the difference between Khmer New Year and Bon Om Touk. The problem is that foreigners often misunderstand the difference, particularly when newly arriving in Cambodia, because they think of Songkran when they think of "Water Festival" (because the throwing of buckets of water on people makes for good TV news in western countries, maybe? Or because more people they know have been in Thailand for new year festivities in the past?). In fact I had exactly the same problem the first time I arrived in Cambodia! :P Scatterman (talk) 07:00, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article should not exist...[edit]

It should redirect to a disambiguation page for all the holidays and celebrations around the world known as the 'Water Festival'. That itself can be anything from New Year celebrations in Southeast Asia (based on the Hindu calendar) to actual water festivals such as the boat racing ones. --Dara (talk) 15:48, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with Songkran[edit]

The article Songkran is redundant. It claims to use the term as a catch-all umbrella term covering Southeast Asian new year observances, but there is no evidence that the term is used by other groups than the Thai and Lao. Paul_012 (talk) 14:32, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Strong oppose "Songkran" refers to those South and Southeast Asian New Year festivals that are celebrated in Theravada Buddhist countries (Thailand, Cambodia, Sri lanka, Lao and Myanmar) that use the Buddhist calendar. As a result, merging it with "Water Festival" would be inaccurate because not all of those countries celebrate the "Water Festival", specifically Sri Lanka. The article should be kept as the Buddhist lunisolar calendar-equivalent article to the Hindu lunisolar calendar-equivalent article, Mesha Sankranti. Oppose I think this page should function as a disambiguation page for the various 'water festivals', though I see problems with what they are. I wouldn't be surprised to see Well dressing being added at some point. --RichardW57m (talk) 12:47, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
