[edit]
  • 209 ft Birmingham and Fazeley: Part of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal is the lowest point of the BCN.
  • Interfaces to other canals: Aldersley Junction (and Autherley Junction) 132 ft below Wolverhampton level = 341 ft.
  • Stourbridge Canal 356 ft. Oosoom Talk to me 19:37, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Correction required - the caption at the top right refers to 18 feet difference but the main text shows 20 feet difference - they can't both be right —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.159.109.139 (talk) 09:11, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've used the only BCN lock picture I could find, but since it doesn't link any of the named levels, and is on a canal not listed in the article, we probably need a more appropriate picture (or pictures)! Andy Mabbett 20:22, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added two images of the New Smethwick Pumphouse, showing the two levels. Shame the exposure does not match. Oosoom Talk to me 21:06, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - those are good and appropriate images, but I was specifically referring to a picture of a lock. Great article, BTW! Andy Mabbett 21:13, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've made, uploaded and linked to a gamma-corrected version (I use IrfanView, for Windows, - it's free! See its "Image/ Enhance Colours" menu options). How does that look? I didn't overwrite the original , as I notice that it's used elsewhere. Andy Mabbett 21:23, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Much improved - thanks. Could be used elsewhere. Oosoom Talk to me 09:10, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Line of original canal at Smethwich Summit

[edit]

Some modern local historians dispute the line of the original pre-Smeaton 491 ft cut and even claim that it crossed west of the Telford New Line near to Brasshouse Lane. They say the footpath visible at the top of the hill in old photographs is not evidence of a previous canal. Will try to look further. I recall that this is deduced from artifacts rather than any possible maps, which would predate Ordnance Survey accuracy. Oosoom Talk 18:49, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Page 33 of Shill, Ray (1999, 2002), Birmingham's Canals, Sutton Publishing Ltd, ISBN 0-7509-2077-7 states "It is now accepted that the original course curved across the route of the New Main Line through or near what is now the engine house". Oosoom Talk 19:08, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
