Use of "ward"[edit]

I am curious about the use of the term "ward" the title of an article about a parish. Is the parish also a ward? Does it have precisely the same boundaries as a ward? Laurel Bush 15:03, 26 October 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Hope you have your answer by now. Since 1974 North Yorkshire has been broken up into administrative districts. The two Welburns are both in the Ryedale District. The area it covers is huge and needs to be broken down into smaller sections, each with a representative on the district council. These smaller sections are called "wards" and each contains several civil parishes. --Oldontarian (talk) 17:09, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Castle Howard sub-section[edit]

I believe the part of the article about Castle Howard has been misplaced. There is another Welburn (named Welburn (Amotherby Ward)) with a sub-section titled Castle Howard Railway Station. I have travelled in the area and know that Amotherby is northwest by west of Malton, while Castle Howard is west (and slightly south) of Malton. Welburn (Amotherby Ward) is south of Castle Howard. Google Earth is very helpful here. Making the correction myself is beyond my wikipedia abilities.

Thanks for pointing this out. I have moved the section across to the other article. Keith D (talk) 02:54, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gabriel's Gully[edit]

By 1860, they had arrived in Port Chalmers, New Zealand aboard the Ocean Chief and headed to the gold diggings at Gabriel's Gully. Like many before them, Thomas and Joseph must have found slim pickings... The Otago Gold Rush didn't begin until after the Gabriel's Gully discoveries - which were in 1861. Either the date in this article is incorrect or the Parkers must have spent some time in or around Dunedin before heading to the goldfields (which reached their peak in 1862-3). Grutness...wha? 12:35, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
