I read that translations of English language Wikipedia pages are not accepted for the Welsh Wikipedia. Can someone please provide me with more details about this?--Aa2-2004 (talk) 18:54, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I read that too and was a bit baffled, especially as I'm an administrator on the Welsh Wikipedia! I can only assume that Robin has been mis-quoted, and that he meant to say that the Welsh Wikipedia is more than just translations of the English Wikipedia. Or more likely he mentioned something about (annoying) occasions where people create artilces there having using online translations of (usually) English language Wikipedia articles. Either way, I can confirm that there is no policy that forbids translations of articles from the English Wikipedia.--Rhyswynne (talk) 21:27, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answering. Although I was hoping that was an actual policy. Wikipedia projects have always encouraged translations, but personally I see that as a negative thing. For example, most people who can read Welsh probably know English, so what's the point of reading a translated article if you can read the original? However if translation was discouraged, then each version would have it's own sources and would give a different perspective on the issue. Many on the Welsh Wikipedia probably share your view regarding the value of translations from English. One argument for Welsh translations of English text is that the reader does not have to switch to English and reading in Welsh becomes the norm. You probably know this, but a kind of diglossia exist--Rhyswynne (talk) 21:16, 25 July 2013 (UTC)s in Wales. Sadly sources in Welsh (on-line in particular) are pretty thin on the ground, so these are copies over from original/English version. The subject of perspective is also an interesting one which becomes obvious when you can read articles in more than one language![reply]
As an Englishman retired to Wales (where else?), and an experienced editor on Wikipedia with a special interest in creating and improving articles relating to Wales, I would love to contribute to Wicipedia. My Welsh, however, is as yet very basic (must do better!). Is there a group of editors who collaborate across the two languages to create or improve articles in both? @Tony Holkham: There are various tasks that can be done, many are listed on a page especially aimed at Welsh learners, but some can be done with next to no knowledge of the language. Another development since the page was created is Wikidata. The Welsh Wicipedia makes quite a bit of use of this as a source for infoboxes (much more than the English Wikipedia I believe), so information is updated automatically, and Wikidata is also used to generate articles. So, the more items on Wikidata about Wales, the better, and this info will then be useful to other wikis too.
