How can it be a notification of a death sentence if it's dated 12 Sept 1980, and the guy died 26 June 1981?

Not, it's just used as abbreviation.
"treason acts and sentenced to death and subsequently" you already said in the first "para" of the lead that he was executed.
Moved around a bit and improved (I hope) what I say about the trial in the lead.
"after German Reunification when" no reason to capitalise reunification.

Had to check, yes.
"the Abitur" this is in italics in our article, but could use an explanation in parentheses or a footnote.
Footnote now, but the word could perhaps be removed. (For East Germans, whether they were allowed to study was more to do with politics than with school).
