Can we get this upgraded[edit]

I have added a lot of content to this project, but I don't know how to get it upgraded from being a stub. I'm a new contributor and just now learning the in's-and-out's of Wikipedia. DavidHenrickson (talk) 22:30, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Future Content to Add[edit]

There needs to be a mention of "Prospect Books" in prospect and the man who's love for the area lead him to start it. There needs to be some info about the North Branch and the the fact that it crosses ALC land. Any info about the private sections of the creek. If there is any information about Betty Greene (early pioneer/settler) it needs to get added to the section on Nobleboro. There might need to be a description of log-drives, and the idea that axe-cut trees go down the stream with less trouble than crosscut trees. Some mention of pollution, and the now defunct tannary in Middleville. We need more pictures. Some information on the impact of the creek on the West Canada Valley, and the town of Herkimer. Hinkley[edit]

The section Hinkley Reservoir says it was renamed in 1928. But I believe it is still called Hinkley (that is what I knew it as when growing up). The article says it was renamed but seems to imply Hinkley is the current name. So there must be more to the story. Did the new name just not stick and Hinkley remained the common name. As is stands now, I find the paragraph unclear.

Searching on Kuyahoora finds this [[1]] which says Kuyahoora is an Indian name for the Creek. Also confirmed here [[2]]. Apparently, Kuyahoora Valley is still used in the area as there are several things using the name. MB 23:39, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that too, I certainly recall it being referred to as "Hinckley" as well but with only a brief familiarity with the region and without access to the offline source, I figured maybe it was just something better understood by locals. However, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names still lists the official name of the reservoir as "Hinckley Reservoir" in their GNIS database (U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Hinckley Reservoir), though they do list "Kuyahoora Reservoir" as an alternate name. My go-to source for Native American placenames notes that West Canada Creek was also known as Kuy-a-ho-ra, meaning "slanting waters" (see bottom of page 138). I'll try to work this in so at least the "name change" is qualified somewhat, though I'm still at a loss for what caused the name to apparently not stick. Here is a source that says Kuyahoora means "leaping waters": [[3]]. I searched on "Kuyahoora Lake" and only found a few mentions, so it is clearly overwhelming known today as Hinkley. Generalizing on the issue, there should probably be mention that Kuyahoora is an alternate name for the valley/creek since it is in common use today for the region. I already created a redirect. I've set the discussion of the "Kuyahoora" name in its own paragraph under "History" for emphasis, and bolded the titles for incoming redirects. This may be important enough to mention in the lede; judging from your sources, this doesn't seem to be a truly obscure name for the river even if it is no longer official today.
