Origin of name

[edit]

Can anyone verify this:

Westonzoyland...derives its name from being the western most settlement on the isle of Sowy, an area of slightly higher ground

...taken from here?

This seem likely Victoria County History/British History Online says "Westonzoyland derives its name from its position as the western settlement on Sowy, the name given, probably before 1066, to the 'island' between the rivers Cary, since displaced by the King's Sedgemoor Drain, and Parrett". The Sowy River & River Cary have changed their course over the years as drainage channels have been dug etc. It was (around the 1881 census) two words ie Weston Zoyland (see genealogy site). Thanks for that, I must have put a typo in my search to only retrieve the page I quoted. --Pontificalibus (talk) 08:07, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The royalist forces of Lord Grey of Warke? Grey was leading the rebel cavalry, wasn't he? Mb 3r7864 (talk) 19:38, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
