MoonDog

Would it be inappropriate to add MoonDog, a citizen famous with locals? He is notable for riding his bicycle throughout the city with flags on the back that wave as he rides. He's famous for being in the beginning AND end of the Christmas parade (when he is never on the list of floats!), and being given a new bicycle by the officers of the police dept. after his was stolen a number of years ago. He also has a locker at the Wheeling Police Dept. It seems that MoonDog is a well-known citizen when there is not much known about him (hmmm...). Everyone knows who he is, and would recognize him, but I do not know of anyone who actually knows much about MoonDog's past (or present for that matter). Morganismysheltie 21:48, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

In cases where there uncertainty, I always lean towards including information. After all, it can always be removed later. More importantly, given this article is only likely to be read by locals, and given he is well known in the area, I see no problem adding him.the1physicist 22:06, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm an inclusionist myself, but unless this information is sourced (a couple of local newspaper articles would probably do), I don't think its inclusion is warranted. Not exactly an encyclopedic topic at any rate.—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) • (yo?); 22:17, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

As a former Wheelinite, I would welcome some well sourced information on MoonDog if it exists. I've seen him inumberable times and would love to find out more about the guy. MarkMascolino 00:08, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Actually, a WTRF anchor gave Moondog a new bicycle. This was back in 1999, while I was serving as promotion manager at the station. IIRC, the police bought him a new bicycle after the one the TV station gave him was stolen. Kurtbw 14:59, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I say why not? He IS very well known in the town, although there is not much known about him. --Santa Dog 72 21:58, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Jamboree USA was originally housed in the Virginia Theatre and moved to the Capitol Music Hall in the late 1940s.

History

I fully intend on creating a separate article entry on the history of wheeling. When I do so, I will shorten the current portion on this article entry. Thanks for your patience. Mphamilton 07:28, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Family Ties reference

Not of major importance but actually the show Family Ties is set in Akron, hence the quote "Let's go DOWN to Wheeling" as it is common in this region to refer destinations south as being "down". In this case someone in Columbus would likely refer to the trip as going "over" to Wheeling as it is due east about 135 miles. Also if I recall correctly in watching the show that among the rare outdoor shots done there was an interstate sign showing Interstate 77 which runs right through Akron and nowhere near Columbus which lies about 85 miles west of I-77. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 135.214.154.100 (talk) 17:56, 23 March 2007 (UTC).

Fort Henry

According to "History of Greater Wheeling and Vicinity"
by Charles A. Wingerter
Chicago: Lewis Publishing, 1912.
p. 78-100
This took place in 1782 not 1777

WHEELING, 14th September, 1782. Sir: On the evening of the 11th instant a body of the enemy appeared in sight of our garrison. They immediately formed their lines around the garrison, paraded British colors, and demanded the fort to be surrendered, which was refused. About twelve o'clock at night they rushed hard on the pickets, in oder to storm, but were repulsed. They made two other attempts to storm, before day, but to no purpose.

About eight o'clock next morning, there came a negro from them to us, and informed us that the force consisted of a British Captain and forty regular soldiers, and two hundred and sixty Indians. The enemy kept a continual fire the whole day. About ten o'clock at night they made a fourth attempt to storm, to no better purpose than the former. The enemy continued round the garrison till the morning of the 13th instant, when they disappeared. Our loss is none. Daniel Sullivan, who arrived here in the first of the action, is wounded in the foot.

I believe they have driven the greater part of our stock away, and might, I think, be soon overtaken.

I am, with due respect, your obedient servant, Ebenezer Zane. To: William Irvine, Brigadier General, Commanding Western Department, Fort Pitt.

Further supporting this date is that the City of Wheeling celebrated the 225th anniversary of the event, including the Betty Zane run, Labor day weekend 2007. --Jumpnjimmyj 17:06, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

McCarthy

Joseph McCarthy gave a famous speech here to the Republican Women's club of Wheeling, West Virginia. He claimed to have a list of communists in his hand. This might be worth adding. JVandezande (talk) 20:03, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:WheelingSeal.gif

Image:WheelingSeal.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Name

The article says that Wheeling is from an Adena term meaning "place of the skull". As the Adena article says that culture died out about 100 BC, I doubt that anyone knows that much about their language. Can anyone elucidate? Rojomoke (talk) 17:27, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Notable Person: Krista Montgomery

Krista Montgomery is not a professional artist or model, and she has no film credits as a make-up artist. She does not qualify as a notable person considering those attributes. She is notable, however, considering her public statements that she feels she is a werecat, cited on the Otherkin website. If this is not notable, remove her from the list of Notable People from Wheeling, rather than reverting to a less remarkable credit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rntaboy (talkcontribs) 22:50, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I have once again reverted your edits. Edit wars serve no useful purpose on wikipedia. Please do not persist in this behavior.

I have no personal knowledge of Krista Montgomery. A google search did reveal that she is listed on the Model Mayhem web site, which appears (as far as I can determine) to be a legitimate web site for working models. I consider this to be a reasonable cite that this individual is in fact a working model. I do not however have any knowledge of whether or not this individual is successful enough to qualify as a "notable" person.

I can see no reason for listing her participation on one particular social type of web site.

Your edit is being reverted only because "werecat" is not an occupation or a reason to be listed as a notable person, not because I assert that this individual is a successful model.

Please do not once again revert this to the "werecat" listing as it will only continue to be reverted and will likely result in the article being locked for future edits. If you have some sort of personal issue with this individual please resolve it someplace other than on wikipedia. Continued edit wars serve no useful purpose. Please desist in this behavior. Engineer comp geek (talk) 00:47, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

After poking around further, I do not see enough evidence to support Krista Montgomery as a notable person. I have therefore removed her from the list of notable people. If you believe that Krista Montgomery does belong on the list of notable people, please discuss it here and provide cites that support the assertion of notability. What about after 1885?

The history section seems to end pretty early and virtually nothing seems to be said about the place after 1885. I've never even been here, but I'm thinking of expanding the history section if no one else will.--T. Anthony (talk) 03:09, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

population by county

In the first paragraph, the correct 2010 population of Wheeling is noted, but the parenthetical population figures by county (mostly in Ohio County, the remainder in Marshall County) are the outdated 2000 figures. Can someone correct this, please? Paul (talk) 19:06, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Wheeling, West Virginia/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

The article would need some more high quality sources to approach A level. One should work on adding some properly referenced sources and take it over to Good Article assessment to see about getting it up to "Good" status. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 22:27, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
