Village?[edit]

Is Whitemans Green a separate village or just a place in Cuckfield? Legally I think it is within the civil parish of Cuckfield. Also is it "Whiteman's Green" or "Whitemans Green" (apostrophe or not)--Erp (talk) 18:14, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Legend[edit]

When I was young I heard that Whiteman's Green is called that because the initial plans for the Cuckfield church was to have it built at Whiteman's Green (which is the high point of the village); however, each night a white giant tore down the work that had been done that day so eventually the villagers built the church where it is now (the low point of the village) and the initial spot named White-man's Green. Unfortunately I can't find any reference on the web nor do I have any hard copy reference to this legend. Someone living in the area might want to check and add it to the article (assuming my memory is correct).--Erp (talk) 04:09, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
