Today the Le Maire Strait is the passage between the Tierra del Fuego and the Staten Island. Since this passage is little known, it is easy to understand that Schouten gave this name to the Drake strait. It is possible to state explicitly what he named so?

I arrived here to check the info in a young-reader magazine according to whom the VOC had the monopoly on the passage through the Magellan strait and he therefore rounded Cape Horn not to pay this tax. I feel the magazine account more clear than the WIKI one, that does not says why. It is possible to expand the sentence?
