Hmmm. Thanks for the link, but I'm afraid that doesn't explain it very well. So, we've got, He owed all his prior claims to Richard II. What does that mean? Prior claims to what? I'm guessing this is all very obvious to somebody familiar with the whole British peerage system, but it's totally mysterious to me.
