Gilchrist was one of the very few American composers of this period who did not study in Europe.[edit]
As stated, assuredly not nearly true, in fact, a rather baffling statement!...; there was a huge number of composers in the United States in the 19th century/early 20th century, some of whom were born in Europe to be sure, but of the others, only a small proportion could afford to study in Europe. (Now most of those composers- the vast majority- were not professional composers, that is, did not make their living off of royalties from their compositions, etc.; but while I'm sure the person who inserted that statement into the article meant something, unless it is edited (by anyone, of course) to something defensible and more nearly true within a very brief period, I shall simply delete the claim without further anything.
