soften the remark further[edit]

Quite a while back, I came across "O'Connell managed to be late to two papal conclaves in a row" and at the time I added the explanation that he had to cross an ocean in the slower transportation of the day, because I felt that without such explanation, the comment was a criticism of this cardinal.
