If you read the referenced article on Mahlon Loomis you will see why people are skeptical about Ward. We do not know whether Loomis copied from Ward or Ward copied from Loomis, but one of them did. They also did for the radio telegraph what Philipp Reis did for the telephone. Loomis/Ward got some promising results, they had an incorrect theory about how it worked, they tried and failed to get financial support for the idea, and later experimentors discovered the correct theory and how to make it practical.
