Adelaides[edit]

William I's mother is Adelaide, daughter of Richard II, Duke of Normandy; sister of Robert II, Duke of Normandy; and thus aunt of William the Conqueror. The wikilink is to another Adelaide—her niece, Adelaide of Normandy, daughter of Robert II and sister of William the Conqueror. So I'm going to unlink the name. William's second wife[edit]

The date of his second marriage is about seven years after he died. 64.40.54.31 (talk) 23:15, 4 June 2013 (UTC) William and Stephanie's son Raymond of Burgundy was born c. 1070 so their marriage was probably prior to that date. Stephanie and Etiennette are one and the same. Etiennette is the French term for the name Stephanie. As far as I can tell, so far, only one person is listed as the wife of Guillaume, (french name for William), and that is Etienette (Stephanie), de (of) Longuy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.45.111.140 (talk) 03:17, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It would appear that the above comment is correct, and that this article is a mess. Notably, the longer and more detailed French-language Wikipedia article gives William only one wife, whom they identify as "Étiennette de Bourgogne." Additionally, the eighth edition (2004) of Frederick Lewis Weis's Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists Who Came to America Before 1700, which identifies William's sole wife as "Stephanie" and calls her parentage unknown, has the following note on the range of views as to her identity and origins: "Prof. David H. Kelly believes her parentage unproven (2003). De Vajay, in Annales de Bourgogne vol. 32 (1960) 258-261, identifies Stephanie (Etiennette) as dau. of Clemence de Foix & Albert de Longwy, Duke of Lorraine, d. 1048. Clemence is identified as dau. of Bernard I Roger, Comte de Foix, d. 1035, & Garsinde de Bigorre; & Bernard as son of Roger I de Carcassonne & wife Adelaide. Moriarty, The Plantagenet Ancestry of King Edward III and Queen Philippa, supplies pedigree charts for these families, but does not agree with de Vajay as to her identity. Stephanie (English form) is Etiennette (French form) are one and the same. Vajay derived her from Longwy, but writing 40 years later he retracted this identification, stating he had misinterpreted a critical document central to his theory, which actually referred instead to her granddaughter of the same name. The only remaining derivations are based on the vague statement that Raymond of Burgundy, Stephanie's son, and Henry of Burgundy, Raymond's brother-in-law via their marriages, were 'cousins'. A separate theory makes Henry's mother from Barcelona based on the byname of one of Henry's brothers. Since Henry's mother then might have been from Barcelona, and Henry was a 'cousin' of Raymond, then maybe Raymond's mother was also from Barcelona (or from the related Counts of Foix).
