Suggested modificatrions from Paul Hooper

[edit]

As noted in my earlier submission regarding Wikipedia’s Institute of Pacific Relations (IPR) article, I am reluctant to alter another person’s work and prefer instead to offer suggestions and comments through the “Talk” section which readers can use as they see fit.

Suggested revisions and additions to the William L. Holland article:

Holland died on May 8, 2008.

Holland’s father was primarily a railway employee who also worked on sheep and dairy farms. He was not a settled farmer. See Holland Memoirs, pp. 167-68.

Holland first went to Kyoto in 1929 (not 1932) to assist with the IPR’s third international conference. He had joined the Institute’s staff late in the previous year following his graduation from Canterbury College at the invitation of John B. Condliffe, one of his instructors at Canterbury, who had been appointed as the Institute’s initial Research Secretary a few months earlier.

It might also be noted that Holland served the IPR longer (and, many felt, better) than any of its other major officers. Further, he maintained an active scholarly schedule until the last few years of his life, assisting those engaged in Institute-related research, identifying and explaining archival materials and reading drafts and manuscripts.

One additional source to on his life is his obituary in the August 3, 2008 issue of the Amherst Bulletin www.amhearstbulletin.com, his local newspaper at the time of his death. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.171.223.99 (talk) 21:11, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
