NAS birth date inaccuracy, Smithsonian birth place inaccuracy

[edit]

Just leaving this note in case this is a future matter of debate. It appeas that the National Academy of Sciences biographical memoir of Trowbridge, otherwise a good source, gives the wrong year for his birth date (May 25, 1825). It is also given incorrectly in a preceding NAS Proceedings article from 1893, but is corrected in later reports from the NAS. All other contemporary biographical material gives it as May 25, 1828, and Library of Congress Authority Controls use 1828. Additionally, entries in other historical sketches and obituaries (including those from the United States Military Academy) mentions his entry at West Point in 1844 at the age of 16, which would make 1828 the more plausible year of birth. As of May 2015, the Smithsonian Institution has a web page indicating Trowbridge's place of birth as Troy, New York. This seems to be a confusion with Troy, Michigan. No other biographical sources make this claim, and others substantiate that his parents were in Oakland County, Michigan at the time of his birth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickknack00 (talkcontribs) 23:34, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
