William Bowater married Eliza Jane Davey (d. 23 June 1912), daughter of Thomas Davey, of Bristol, Gloucestershire, on 8 June 1861 and they went on to have nine children:

Norman Vansittart Bowater (1 July 1862 - 6 May 1934)
Sir Thomas Vansittart Bowater, 1st Baronet (29 October 1862 - 28 March 1938)
