Connection to Wal*Mart?

Having spent nearly a year in Australia, I am not convinced that the Woolworths Limited discount retailer, The Big W is not an extension of America's 'evil w' otherwise known as Wal*Mart. In actuality, both the Big W and Woolworth [the grocer] utilize the 'smiley face' associated with America's Wal*Mart stores. I'd be curious to learn from others there own observation on this matter. -- 203.188.144.61 09:06, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Suggestions

I am new to Wikipedia so bare with me. I am a manager at Woolworths (or Safeway as it is in Victoria) and the list of departments can be improved. (Obviously I am not the one to do it!) Service - checkouts and service desk (colloquially known as the "smoke shop", as this is where cigarettes and their related produce are sold) I have never heard the service desk referred to as the "smoke shop" although it is possible that this does occur in other regions/states etc... Management - store management, systems office, training staff, stock take staff This department actually called 'Nontrade' and includes Store Management and Admin Staff. Dairy - also known as perishables I'd have this the other way around, and I'd include a note that it includes the freezer section and is often under the command of the Long life manager. I think this should also be moved to the Woolworths Supermarkets article. This is my first ever Wikipedia post, I hope I haven't offended anyone :-) Teiresias84 11:05, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

It is known by smoke shop in NSW. -- 203.26.178.133 04:38, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Frequent Shopper Club

Frequent Shopper Club should definitely be merged, but into the Woolworths Supermarkets article rather than the Woolworths Limited article, as it pertains only to its supermarkets, not its other businesses. Not significant in its own right to warrant an article, barely has any external references. Murtoa 14:08, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

I disagree with it being moved to Woolworths Supermarkets and not Woolworths Limited as points are also awarded when shopping at BWS, however I also feel it does not warrant its own page. (Jayjay04 06:57, 17 July 2007 (UTC))
Wasn't aware of the usage at BWS. If that's correct, then I concur Murtoa 12:47, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

There seems to be an edit war developing here. Earlier today I replaced a completely inappropriate logo (since deleted) with something more representative: File:Woolworths Limited.gif There have been several subsequent edits between other users alternating between that logo and an earlier upload: 100px The second image isn't really a logo - it's simply the company name in a different typeface. The first image is featured on the Woolworths website and is the graphic most commonly associated with Woolworths and as such, deserves to be featured in the Wikipedia article. Any thoughts? Snibbo 10:46, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I think that the second image is the correct one. It appears to be the logo of "Woolworths Limited", as opposed to "Woolworths Supermarkets". While I agree that the supermarket logo is the most recognisable, it pertains just to the supermarkets, and would be inappropriate to describe the group, which contains Dick Smith, Dan Murphy's etc. The second image correctly covers the group as a whole. This logo use mirrors exactly what Woolies itself uses at woolworthslimited.com.au (the group website) and woolworths.com.au (the supermarket website) respectively. Murtoa 12:49, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
The second image is correct. Woolworths supermarkets and Woolworths Limited need to be differentiated. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sillywiki (talkcontribs) 14:00, August 22, 2007 (UTC).

Safeway

The Safeway section in the article seems a bit in depth for an article on the company as a whole. Perhaps it should be given its own article and a link placed on here for it? Anyone else agree? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sillywiki (talkcontribs) 14:02, August 22, 2007 (UTC).

I agree that the Safeway section appears disproportionately large. But I don't believe it warrants its own article; going forward the only emerging Safeway-specific commentary would be likely to be about if/when Woolies changes the name; otherwise it will mirror what Woolworths supermarkets does. I would rather look more critically at the existing content for Safeway; for example I'm not sure who shifted from Safeway to the Woolies board is notable. Murtoa 04:31, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

USA

There used to be a chain of "five and dime" stores in the USA that went by the name "Woolworths". Is this the same company? Also, there still exists a grocery chain by the name "Safeway" that operates in Northern California (Southern California stores operate as "Vons"). Are these two companies related, or is it just a coincidence that they have the same names? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.67.35.112 (talk) 07:44, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

The name was originally taken from that chain, but they are not related companies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.26.178.133 (talk) 07:48, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Tandy Chain of stores

A reference is made to Woolworths Limited purchasing the Tandy Chain of stores from InterTan Inc. Woolworths Limited, from memory, didn't purchase the chain, actually purchased InterTan Australia, effectively taking over Tandy. I'm an assistant manager at a Tandy store and all our stuff has InterTan Australia Limited written on it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.243.218.171 (talk) 14:50, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Annual Profit

The wiki page says around 5 billion for 2007, but their annual report doesn't mention figures anywhere near that (1-2 billion depending on before or after tax and other things). Where did the figure in the info box come from? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.170.90.166 (talk) 09:54, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Forgotten history

During the 1960's Woolworths purchased numerous Grocery companies in most states of Australia. It is rather sad that other than Flemings, no reference is made to any of the following brands is made to BCC, Philip Leong, Crofts, Nancarrows -which Woolworths rebranded many Crofts stores, etc etc. Many Woolworths Food Fair stores and poorly trading supermarkets were often rebranded to these respective brands. There is a rich history in this era of Woolworths. -- 124.184.179.21 09:06, 10:51, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

List of Woolworths Limited companies

I came to the article after seeing this help desk requst. I then copy-paste move of list information from Woolworths Limited to List of Woolworths Limited companies to address the {{prose}} template[1] issues. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:01, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
