Soweit ersichtlich, wurde der Begriff erstmals im Jahre 1905 von dem deutschen Musiktheoretiker Georg Capellen verwendet, der darunter im Sinne einer „Zukunftsmusik“ bzw. einer universalen Metamusik einen „exotischen Musikstil“ verstand.[2] Der Begriff „World Music“ etablierte sich Anfang der 1960er-Jahre im akademischen Umfeld, als der amerikanische Musikwissenschaftler Robert E. Brown einen inhaltlich völlig neuen Studiengang an der Wesleyan University (USA) einführte[3] und in San Francisco das Center for World Music seine Aktivitäten aufnahm.
