Rename back to Xu Yuhua

[edit]

As the chess player was world champion for a time, but the judoka's achievements are not quite in the same class, I suggest that she should be treated as the primary meaning of the name on Wikipedia. The bulk of the links to the name appear to refer to the chess player. PatGallacher (talk) 00:05, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. This page was renamed from Xu Yuhua to Xu Yuhua (chess player) without discussion on 6-Aug-2008. We should rename it back. Peter Ballard (talk) 00:26, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. It's hard to say a chess world champion is significantly more famous than a judo world 3rd place. Most incoming links to Xu Yuhua (chess player) are generated by Template:Chess in China. There is no need to make Xu Yuhua (chess player) as the primary page. And, if you really want to move it back, please place a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves and follow the process. Thanks. --Neo-Jay (talk) 13:50, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was aware I would have to do that at some point, I was just testing the water. PatGallacher (talk) 13:58, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever approach we go for, we certainly don't need the Xu Yuhua (disambiguation) page, since at present Xu Yuhua is adequate. See Wikipedia guidelines on disambiguation pages. PatGallacher (talk) 19:20, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Which guideline are you referring to? I prefer a hatnote pointing to Xu Yuhua (disambiguation) rather than a hatnote pointing to Xu Yuhua (judo), because then we don't have to go back and fix it when a third or fourth Xu Yuhua arises. But I'm happy to be corrected if there's a guideline contradicting that reasoning. Peter Ballard (talk) 23:51, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot point to a guideline off the top of my head. However you preference appears to me to be misconceived, since we should base our approach on how many Xu Yuhuas we have at present, not the hypothetical chance of a third appearing. There is a precedent with the deletion of a disambiguation page for Heather Mills, after an AFD discussion, on the grounds that since we only have 2 people of this name we did not need this page. PatGallacher (talk) 23:57, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Hatnote#Two articles with the same title says "When two articles share the same title, the unambiguated article should include a hatnote with a link to the other article. It is not necessary to create a separate disambiguation page" - so I was wrong.
As for the merit of who owns the namespace, "Xu Yuhua" gets 10500 google hits with chess, 1540 with judo. I don't really care which way it goes, though I lean towards Xu Yuhua being the chess player. One-time olympians often disappear from the radar, while top chess players' games tend are played over for years to come. Though as a chess editor I'm obviously biased. Peter Ballard (talk) 00:21, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the most convenient solution is to move Xu Yuhua (disambiguation) back to Xu Yuhua and maintain it as a disambiguation page. Otherwise we need an administrator to delete and move. --Neo-Jay (talk) 07:51, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Xu Yuhua (chess player)Xu Yuhua — Where we have only two people with a name the margin of notability between them does not have to be very great to decide that one is the primary meaning. It is sometimes not easy comparing notability between different areas of human achievement. However the chess player was world champion for a time, the judoka was not. The judoka should be a hatnote on this article. PatGallacher (talk) 21:22, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
