feel a need to have machigonne in lede[edit]

Machigonne is the name on the historic register list, so I think it needs to be in the lead paragraph. As an aside, I'd pull the "not to be confused with" and either delete it or make it a dab template dm (talk) 14:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to this page it is listed as Yankee. Also, all the references refer to it as Yankee. I can't see the point in confusing readers by picking just one name out of the several it has had and promoting it to the intro.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "dab template", but the {{otherships}} template is really for ships with the same name, not for a ship with a similar name. Gatoclass (talk) 14:13, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I have two competing refs for you :) one and two I agree it's current name is Yankee and that should be the article name. I just think that if it was put on the nrhp as "machigonne", it should be in the lede. NRHP reference and renovation characterisation issue[edit]

I added the NRHP Registration as a reference to the article, somewhat awkwardly in 3 parts, including the text, the accompanying photos, and the accompanying correspondence. Following their links, you will see that you get a weird shallow screenview at the NYS OPRHP website. To actually view these documents, it is intolerable to try to scroll and read there, you have to print them instead. I usually print them to a PDF file and then view that onscreen. If your PC doesn't already have a PDF-writer installed, you can get a free one at www.software995.com. Any improvements to how these 3 items can be presented, hopefully all part of one reference footnote as done for PDFs of text and photos in NHL articles such as Lightship Ambrose (another article about a NY harbor ship needing attention on other matters), would be appreciated.

Anyhow, the reference text probably has some good material for use in the article. I noticed in passing that one of the letters in support of the NRHP nomination claims that 8,000,000 immigrants were transported on the ferry. That itself is not a great source, but it suggests that a citeable version of a factoid like that might be found elsewhere. The reference text is a good source itself and also has a bibliography of other sources, including a 1976 New York Times article that might be relatively accessible to those with NYT archives access.

Also, the current phrasing in the article suggests that renovating this historic ship was a condition for its NRHP listing. I don't believe that would be the case, as renovation is not ever a requirement for NRHP listing and could in fact detract from the historic integrity and NRHP eligibility. Also, in many cases it would make sense for renovation to occur AFTER listing on the NRHP, to take advantage of tax incentives or for access to grants that may be available for historically appropriate renovations. So, the sentence needs to be revised, or a citation needed tag needs to be added and the current NRHP reference needs to moved to some other statement.

The DYK nominated hook, "that early 20th century immigrants to the United States are said to have obtained their first look at New York from the decks of the ferryboat Yankee (pictured)? " would be stronger if it used the 8,000,000 figure. Perhaps the source is okay after all. Consider: "that 8,000,000 immigrants to the United States are said to have obtained their first look at New York from the decks of the ferryboat Yankee (pictured)? ".

It's in a letter supporting the NRHP nomination, within the "other correspondence link". I am not saying it is a great source for the truth of how many immigrants actually rode the ferry, but it is indeed "said", and that could be documented sufficiently for DYK, although it would require an explicit note within the article footnoting the correspondence page that states the 8,000,000 number. doncram (talk) 01:50, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's the 3rd link labelled "Accompanying nomination correspondence" within Footnote number 9, which i added to the article. As i explain above, you may find that the interface that opens is hard to read, at least for some browsers, and you may want to print the batch of correspondence to a PDF file or to a hard printout in order to read it conveniently.
