Name Change Proposal[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

In light of Younus's recent comments (see here) stating that his name in English is NOT "Younis" but "Younus," I move that this article be renamed "Younus Khan" as opposed to its current name, "Younis Khan." Any thoughts? Muzher 16:05, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe we should wait a little longer till it becomes mainstream usage. IMO, at the moment it is sufficient to mention it in the article. Tintin 16:14, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point, however the man himself has come out and said that "Younis" is incorrect. The fact that "Younus" isn't in common usage shouldn't be of any concern. At the end of the day, this article should be correctly named after the man. He has told us exactly what his name is. Let's show him some respect by renaming this article. Muzher 16:37, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but we should wait till it becomes more mainstream, it could simply be a mix up or otherwise, afterall he has been playing for Pakistan for many years and on the ODI shirts he has 'Younis' on the back, he hasn't mentioned this before and so waiting a while will not change anything. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ansakhad (talkcontribs) 19:30, 5 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]
As I said, it's not a question of whether it's mainstream enough. It's a question of which is the correct name. Wikipedia is meant to be factually correct, in keeping with that we should rename the article to what the living person has said is his real name. Muzher 20:33, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Let's wait at least till Pakistan plays its next match. As Ansakhad said above, he has been playing for many years with "Younis" on his back without any complaints. I suppose if the name in his passport is "Younis", no matter what he says, for all practical purposes he is "Younis". Also, some changes like this never catch up. I remember an interview four or five years back that Muralitharan gave to an English newspaper where he said that his first name is "Mutiah" , but it is still spelt Muttiah in most of the places. Tintin 13:28, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Having it on his back for all those years without complaint doesn't make it the correct name. Although I agree with you that his official Enlgish name (which will be on his passport) is the correct one. But surely when said "Younus" was correct, he must've meant it was the official one? Also if Younus decides to retire from ODIs (not looking unlikely at the moment) we may never see his name on a Pakistan shirt again, since Test shirts don't have names on. It was requested that this article be renamed but there was no consensus for it be moved. --Stemonitis 18:35, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tables[edit]

Was there a need to remove the colour from the Test/ODI Centuries tables? I think it looks poorer without it, perhaps a change in colour would have sufficed. 06 May —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 172.142.231.236 (talk) 20:18, 6 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Like I said in my edit summary, despite the tables looking prettier with colour, it doesn't seem very encyclopaedic. Muzher 20:29, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Age?[edit]

Both wikipedia and cricinfo.com list Younis Khan's age as 31, yet in a recent interview, he mentioned he was 34 ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/8111934.stm ). I don't know whether this is an error on the part of BBC, or whether his real age is 34. I understand in South Asia, there is discrepency between verification of real DOB, as its not officiated always. Would anyone be able to confirm what is his real age indeed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.105.213.178 (talk) 12:59, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've heard an interview where he stated his ODI shirt no, 75, reflects his year of birth, which makes him 2 year older than his supposed real age.Statto74 (talk) 10:58, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pashtun ethnicity[edit]

Younis khan has stated he he Pathan:

I am natural born pathan and you will see that in my captaincy. I will fight against anyone who does not listen to me and I will not lose because I am a pathan

http://www.wellpitched.com/2009/01/younis-pathan-takes-over-pakistan.html

I think the following statement by yellowmonkey is enough in this regard.

Players are not selected on race and many Pashtuns/Punjabis/Sindhis/Muhajjir have represented Pak.

yousaf465' 16:30, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody is saying that he is not a Pathan. It is just that it is not a key factor at all. It is nowhere more important than his achievements on the field. Pakistan does not have a quota system and selection does not depend on political parties, like Zimbabwe. Also, younis is not the first Pathan/Sikh/dalit/indigenous etc to represent the first country so it's not notable uin that regard. this obsession with claiming racial credit is hopeless YellowMonkey (cricket calendar poll!) paid editing=POV 02:26, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Nobody is slected on his race/religion/colour.yousaf465'
That quote isn't even from Younis it's from the writer who is interpreting what Younis said, surely if his ethnicity is important it would have been mentioned in one reliable source? --Jpeeling (talk) 09:02, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect reversed[edit]

The issue about the spelling of his name is very clear. Even the article itself uses "Younus" and this has become universal in the UK and America with very few references to "Younis". Plus, it's a matter of respect. A quick web search will substantiate the move. I copied the TALK page contents to this one. Cheers! Stella BATPHONEGROOVES 16:20, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nomination. It may be that he prefers to be known by that name, but we go by reliable sources, and they substantially prefer "Younis".  — Amakuru (talk) 23:43, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Acc to sources, it should be like that. Itz arka (talk) 10:48, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Birth[edit]

Date of Birth here on wikipedia is 10 December 1997 while on cricinfo profile it is 29 November 1977. As cricinfo is a reliable source I am changing it to 29 November. If anyone has another source which shows correct date of birth please let me know and change accordingly. Anjana LarkaTalk ✉ 05:44, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Why does this article constantly refer to him as Younis? Isn't his last name Khan? Saturdayopen (talk) 19:36, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
