Meaning?

[edit]

This article states the root word for "koala" not once, but twice, but fails to tell what the root means. Please, let's not beg the question so blatantly. --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 20:52, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to the cited references, "gula" means "koala." -- Radagast3 (talk) 21:07, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yugambal / Yugambeh

[edit]

Are there two Yugambal / Yugambeh languages, one Kuric and one a dialect of Bandjalang? Have we gotten them mixed up? Or is it just a matter of differing classifications? Is Ugarupul just the Turrubal language? — kwami (talk) 23:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Yugambal and Yugambeh are two separate languages. Yugambeh is a dialect of Bandjalang (and so is Bandajalangic), while Yugambal is a Southeastern Pama-Nyungan language that has been linked to Bigambal, both of which have unsettled origins (with Yuin-Kuri being one of the hypotheses). See discussion of Yugambal in Bowern (2017: 335, "Language isolates of Australia") and Wafer & Lissarrague (2010: 332-349, "A handbook of Aboriginal languages of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory"). 83.134.120.89 (talk) 10:54, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
