Saso's Nationality[edit]

Although Saso represented Philippines in the Asian Games, Saso still holds her Japanese citizenship as well, as Japanese Nationality Law designates "Article 14　(1)　A Japanese citizen having a foreign nationality shall select one of the nationalities, where he/she obtains foreign and Japanese nationalities prior to his/her becoming twenty years old, before his/her reaching twenty-two years old, and where that time when he/she obtained foreign and Japanese nationalities comes after his or her reaching twenty years old, within two years from that time",^[1] thus Saso is still allowed to hold both nationality legally.---What can I do for someone?- (talk) 02:31, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

{{Infobox golfer}} Doesn't really explain what the "nationality" parameter is for, while this article has an HTML hidden comment that it stands for "sporting nationality". If that truly is the case, it has to be codified to avoid disputes such as this. Otherwise, it could be literally anything, including what actual legal citizenship she does hold. Apparently, the term "sporting nationality" is being used for the country for which an athlete competes. Obviously, according to the rules, an athlete can only represent one country and must decide which. That's why Rory McIlroy decided to play for Ireland at the (postponed) 2020 Olympics, although his nationality is given with "Northern Ireland". However, what is given in our info box is the real nationality, not the "sporting" one. The references are absolutely clear that Saso holds dual citizenship. McIlroy's nationality vis-a-vis Olympics is quite more complicated than Saso's. FWIW, McIlroy, if we're going to legal citizenship, is British, there being no "Northern Irish citizenship", and Irish... but obviously neither is shown at his infobox. Saso won the 2021 U.S. Women's Open, her first major title, becoming the first Filipino to win the tournament.^[1] Saso, at age 19, also became the youngest golfer to win the said tournament alongside with 2008 U.S. Women's Open champion Inbee Park.^[2] Hariboneagle927 (talk) 05:49, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
