Zac made it clear that the voyage is not non stop since he planned at least 15 stops, for 11 to 18 months. Dicks on the other hand in the article alleged that the voyage was NON STOP and solo, having been finished for 9 months. But there is no link or citation which proved that. In the first paragraph of the article it says that Zac intends to complete his trip by Apr. 2009. Further down it says that he needs to be back by Jan. 2010 to break the record. What is correct? Both are correct, just as it says, he needs to be back by Jan 2010 to break the record, but he plans to be back before then (Apr 2009). Russeasby (talk) 14:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

local newspaper report

Could you be more specific about what you mean by "more care must be taken?" The Ventura County Star is a legitimate news source and this is a notable event in Sunderland's life. --Crunch (talk) 12:41, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Neutrality. The article was quite straightforward that whatever happened had mostly to do with underage drinking, that Sunderland says it was a misunderstanding and hopes to have the charges dropped altogether. The text put in the article was skewed away from the source (spun as negatively as possible while still bearing any link to the source at all) and hence at best was highly misleading. Moreover, not only should care be taken in how the text is written from the source, but other sources should be found. This is a BLP. Lastly, with only local, hometown coverage of something like this, I would wonder if it's even encyclopedic. Gwen Gale (talk) 13:27, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Given this later news item, I see even more BLP and WP:Weight worries about putting this in the article ("...discussion of isolated events, criticisms, or news reports about a subject may be verifiable and neutral, but still be disproportionate to their overall significance to the article topic"). Meanwhile, I have yet to find anything about this other than in very local newspapers, making it, at least so far, seem rather less than encyclopedic/notable. It was covered by NBC Los Angeles. And the ABC news affiliate in Los Angeles. These are not "very local newspapers." This arrest is a significant event in Sunderland's life and the point of the article is to describe his life. The arrest can, and should, be included, written in an encyclopedic manner and cited appropriately using legitimate sources. --Crunch (talk) 03:12, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

You're mistaken, insofar as the NBC link has the label "local beat," the ABC link is "abclocal." I haven't said this can't be put in the article, I've been saying it must be handled with much care and that I have worries it is not encyclopedic. Also, please keep in mind, even if it does somehow wind up being significant to this person's life, that is not the same thing as significance to this topic, to this living person's notability as a sailor. I am not mistaken. These are the local NBC and ABC television affiliates in Los Angeles, not quite the same as a neighborhood paper, though obviously not the network news. Furthermore, the reports include quotes from the arresting people and photos. There is not the possibility that will "somewhoe wind up being significant in this person's life." It already is significant in his life. I am concerned that your caution about handling things with care, which is always important, is leading to a whitewashing on a legitimate event in this subject's life. I also disagree that the topic of the article is his notability as a sailor rather than his life. If that were true, than the article would be "Zac Sunderland's Circumnavigation" or "Zac Sunderland's Sailing Career" not just "Zac Sunderland." You're mistaken, those are wholly local LA affiliate reports, they're not network reports, they've been picked up locally from local suburban papers for the local LA market. Moreover, you're also mistaken if you think I'm saying this can't be sourced in the article. I never said they were network reports. I said they were the the local ABC and NBC affiliates. This is not coming direct from 30-Rock (NBC headquarters in Manhattan) but neither is it a hyperlocal blog. --Crunch (talk) 19:23, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
