[edit]

The currency of Zanzibar was called the Ryal, not the Riyal, which is the currency of Saudi Arabia and Oman. Therefore, the article should be retitled as the Zanzibari Ryal - (192.190.108.19 01:58, 12 February 2006 (UTC))[reply]

We could use either "rial", "ryal" or "riyal", given the original Arabic spelling. The Saudis write "riyal" on the back of their banknotes, whereas the Omanis write "rial". We really need to know what was written contemporarily in Zanzibar.

I agree with Dove1950. There is no reason for a lemma "ryal". The (http://colnect.com/en/coins/list/country/2578-Zanzibar coin catalogue) shows clearly that the coin was labeled ریال. This is the same name as the Omani and Saudi currencies, who just chose different transscriptions for the Latin labels. As the Zanzibaris used no transcription we should go for the more usual one i.e. Rial. --Kipala (talk) 19:57, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
