Geotagging

Hi Joe, one of the main reasons for wanting the {{coor at dms}} is to geotag the article, so that external projects like Google Earth and NASA World Wind have an unambiguous way of extracting coordinate info from the Wikipedia database. This is a goal of WikiProject Geographical coordinates. Without this form of the template, there will be no link to the Zero Milestone article from this point in Google Earth. The issue with other skins is known, but the momentum seems to be towards using the templates from everything I've read. Perhaps someone is looking into the skins issue. I guess I could add {{coor title dms}} to the end of the article instead, so that it doesn't look as bad in classic skin (just redundant), but was trying to avoid coding the same coordinates more than once. --GregU 04:39, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. However, WikiProject Geographical coordinates implies that any coor template will geotag the article. If that impression is incorrect, than the project description needs correction. The only reason for using Template:coor at dms is to add a redundant set of coordinates near the title. Other US zero milestones

There are several other US zero milestones, most dedicated at about the same time as Washington's. Some were designed by the same architect. How should we deal with these? Should Zero milestone be made more general and include a section on each, or should a new article be created called something like Zero milestones in the United States?

The are still orginal zero milestonoes or replacements in St Augustine, San Diego, San Antonio, Nashville, Memphis, Rogersville, TN, Lexington, KY

I'd prefer a section for each within one article. The title of the article should not be changed to "Zero milestones in the United States" because the See also section does not list any milestones outside the US, only kilometre stones. — Joe Kress (talk) 01:39, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

That see also section someone just removed, claiming "laundry list"; I restored it; and be whatever it may about kilometre stones my problem is with the Mile Zero redirect coming here and not to a dab page for other Mile Zeros; as below in Mile Zero (Canada) there are two towns in BC that use that as a sobriquet, and there is a Mile Zero in Victoria BC and another in St John's NL, where the convention centre/sports facility is the Mile Zero Centre. The US-centric nature of the redirect is very noticeable to a non-Yank.Skookum1 (talk) 15:45, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Mile Zero (Canada)

Shouldn't the redirect page Mile zero be a disambiguation page to other national zero markers? e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Canada_Highway#The_.22mile_zero.22_concept --84.12.64.112 12:34, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

• "Mile Zero" is also a sobriquet for Lillooet, British Columbia and a google for "BCGNIS "Mile Zero"" will turn up an 1862 ref from the Royal Engineers for that (see Old Cariboo Road; there is a cairn erected in 1958, the centennial of the founding of the BC colony and the Fraser Gold Rush, at the bend in Lillooet's Main Street.Skookum1 (talk) 20:16, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Seems resonable when those articles are created (red links should not appear on dab pages), although the dab article should probably use the capitalized form "Mile Zero", to which "Mile zero" would redirect. Disambiguation pages are used to discriminate between similarly named articles. It is not an index page which lists all occurences of a topic within other articles. Both Lillooet and Dawson Creek, though, are known as "Mile Zero [of something'} (usually without the "of something". Different with Beacon Hill and/or Victoria, which has no such sbriquet; and the film is notable enough (like any film) to have an article. (see WP:Films. The question, really, is if the Zero Milestone in Washington is referred to as "Mile Zero", which the towns of Lillooet and Dawson Creek are, i.e. the question is really where the redirect should go; the film, or either of the two towns known as (and which promote themselves as, or have promoted themselves as) Mile Zero,or to a location in DC which officially is the Zero Milestone; unlike Lillooet and Dawson Creek, Washington itself is not known as "Mile Zero"....the redirect is the issue here, not so much disambiguation as a page, hatnotes/see also could do all that's needed in the dab departmentSkookum1 (talk) 14:15, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
