analysis of name
[edit]Is there any justification for this?
Of the characters making up her name, Zhāng (章) is her surname (not to be confused with the more common Zhāng 张 which is a homophone but written with a different character), Zǐ (子) means 'child' or 'esteemed person', and Yí (怡) means 'joy' or 'happiness'. She has appeared in English language films under the name Ziyi Zhang.
As anyone who knows Chinese can tell you, given names in Chinese usually don't have encyclopedic significance -- to coin a phrase. The first syllable is often one chosen for all the parents' children (my wife and her six siblings all have given names starting with the same syllable), and the second (or often both) may symbolize the parents' aspirations or hopes for the child. Zhang Ziyi's given name looks like par for the course. Her surname is of even less intrinsic interest.
This is a wordy way of saying that this section just looks like fanboy trivia. Unless someone can provide a convincing argument that this section should be kept when even more famous Chinese personages don't have such analyses, I will delete it.

- Your explanation of the names is not always true. Sometimes, a child only has a single character as his or her name (same with his or her position in the family, as China as so many only children now). Or it could be named for something poetic, "Peaceful Wind" "Blue Mountain". This only applies to some names. Tang Wei has the same section, but I believe whoever added it for ZZ was an attempt to justify that her name is also written as Ziyi Zhang. Perhaps it could be removed and put back in the article elsewhere. ★Dasani★ 06:10, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
- Please note that I used qualifying words such as "often" and "may." I am aware that Chinese naming conventions are more complicated than what I wrote. My purpose in writing what I did was to show that any analysis Zhang Ziyi's name is just trivia.
- In any case, you do not offer a justification for including the name analysis in the article. The example of Tang Wei also falls under the rubric of fanboy trivia. I also don't understand how an analysis of her name would "justify that her name is also written Ziyi Zhang." Simply stating that it is conforming to the Western convention of placing the surname after the given name would be more than enough.
- Thus, I still disagree that the information could be relocated. It doesn't belong in this article at all.

- I was not offering any attempts to justify the name "trivia". It has been moved as of yesterday, to the references. I agree that the explanation of the Chinese characters, while correct, is completely irrelevant to her name change of Ziyi Zhang. Therefore, I removed those lines. Tang's article reads, " She has appeared in English language films under the name Tang Wei. In an interview, she stated that her Western name is Rebecca." This is not trivia, just explaining that her name is that. Previous revisions included the trivia bits. ★Dasani★ 21:09, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

- Okay. Regarding Tang Wei, I did a quick scan of that article and didn't find the reference, so I assumed something parallel to Zhang Ziyi was there.
- Out of curiosity, however, why do you keep referring to a "name change"? Her name is not being changed, just the order in which it is listed, as I noted above. ZheXueJia (talk) 20:18, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- A previous version of the article read, for some time, "The name change was her publicist's way to appeal to Western audiences, Ziyi had stated in an interview." ★Dasani★ 04:21, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Mulan
[edit]- Cross-posted at Talk:Mulan (disambiguation), Talk:Jan de Bont, and here.
Back in 2010, there were plans to produce an international movie adaptation of the Chinese folk-tale of Hua Mulan, featuring Jan de Bont as the director and Zhang Ziyi as the titular heroine. I created Mulan (2011 film) after reading this article by The Hollywood Reporter. However, months later, that same website revealed that the financing of the movie had fallen apart shortly before the shootings. Mulan (2011 film) was eventually moved to Mulan (upcoming film). I just userfied it, moving it out of mainspace, and requested deletion of the two redirects. Cheers, theFace 13:08, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- Alas, didn't work. See: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mulan (upcoming film). - theFace 15:12, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- The AfD is closed. The content of Mulan (upcoming film) is now located at User:Face/Mulan (upcoming film). Cheers, theFace 20:56, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Controversy
[edit]Ink Splash Gate
[edit]On December 23rd, 2009, Zhang Ziyi’s posters were inked in Beijing nearby her home. Through the media, Zhao Xinyu broke the news that Zhang Ziyi was tangled with a married businessman, then Zhang Ziyi denied. Zhao Xinyu claimed that it was just her friend to ink Zhang’s posters. Later an article posted on the popular Tianya BBS,[21] said that Zhang Ziyi wanted to do energy business with Yu Guoxiang, nicknamed Xiao Ningbo, but energy business was just a cover, Zhang Ziyi's real thought was to produce film, so she cheated Yu Guoxiang to get about 200 millions yuan. Yu Guoxiang and Zhao Xinyu were good friends, so Zhao Xinyu made revenge on Zhang Ziyi to let others to ink Zhang Ziyi’s posters.
Earthquake Donation Gate
[edit]On January 22nd, 2010, a news about Zhang's donations for relief work after the deadly Wenchuan earthquake said Zhang had only donated 840,000 yuan, 160,000 yuan less than what she had promised.[22][23][24][25] Later two charity groups had released details of donations from Zhang Ziyi to end the debate over whether she honored her promise to donate one million yuan (146,400 U.S. dollars) to earthquake relief charities.[26] In a press conference, Zhang Ziyi said she would take the major responsibility about the donation, the rest of the money would be donated later.Mmmvidyahoo (talk) 05:17, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
