Reply to Hoary's comment[edit]

Dear Hoary: Thanks for your feedback. The paintings were done by Zoe Longfield in the 1940s/50s but they are currently in my possession and the photographs were taken by me. (Separate images of two of these paintings, taken by another photographer, have been published in the Women of Abstract Expressionism book, which is in my reference list.) How do I properly cite these images for the wiki page? Also, please advise if/how I can cite primary source material taken from her archives. Thanks for your help. Susieall2012, I'm not Hoary but I may be able to answer some of your questions:
How do I properly cite these images for the wiki page? We don't cite images. There is the issue of who owns the copyright of the images (typically the photographer, not the subject, unless they're a faithful reproduction of a work of art, in which case it's the artist). You're invited to clarify that at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_related_to_Zoe_Longfield
/how I can cite primary source material taken from her archives? You can use {{Cite archive}}. We prefer published sources, but sometimes archives can be used. We do need to know how to access those archives though. Please see WP:INDICATEAVAIL Vexations (talk) 20:02, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Vexations. (But you're welcome to ping me at any time.) Yes, agreed; though this assumes that the works of art are two-dimensional (as of course they are here). Susieall2012, ownership (even undisputed, legal ownership) of a work of art and the copyright of that work of art are different matters. They may or may not coincide. Please see your talk page on Commons, please comment in the deletion discussion, and of course please don't hesitate to point out my misunderstandings. -- Hoary (talk) 00:52, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Famous photo[edit]

Before I got my grubby hands on what was then a draft:

Longfield [. . .] is featured, along with fellow student Frank Lobdell and others, in a now well-published photo from the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) in 1948.

Currently:

she appears, with fellow student Frank Lobdell and others, in an oft-published 1948 photograph from the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA).

I might have got something wrong. I doubt that we can insert this photograph, but we can add a link to it.* If it's well/oft-published, it should be on the interwebs. But I can't find it. Can anyone provide a link to it?

* This may appear to contradict Vexations' request ("external links") above, but it does not. A note might say something like "The photograph is reproduced in [title, website, link, etc]". (Notes and references can and should be separated; for an illustration of this, see Teikō Shiotani.)

Hi @Hoary: The book has it: [1] I severely that it can copied into the article, as it is likely still under copyright. It is by William Heick, so it will definitely be under copyright. I have put the page in, into the references, p.49, which should help the reader. scope_creepTalk 01:17, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have given it a proper, so the reader can take a squint. scope_creepTalk 01:20, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think of looking in Google Books for the cited book. (Duh! Time for more coffee.) Thank you, scope creep! (However accurate it may be, "oft-published" isn't supported by that source, so I've removed it.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:35, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Funny I was thinking that myself. I've never heard that oft before. I'm oft to the shop. I came across that image earlier on the day. Pure chance really. scope_creepTalk 01:37, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It may sound a little old-fashioned but it's still widely used, particularly in front of past participles (I mean, "taken", "flown", etc; not "took", flew", etc). Humdrum example from a two-month-old source that will have been copyedited: "Vance’s story was celebrated as a glimpse into an oft-ignored pocket of America: the white working class of Appalachia and the Rust Belt who swung to Donald Trump in the 2016 election" (my emphasis). -- Hoary (talk) 02:27, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both, Hoary and Scope_creep, for improving this article. I will continue to add to it as I mine more information about Zoe Longfield over time. I would welcome your edits in the future. Thanks again.Susieall2012 (talk) 06:01, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The paintings are gone[edit]

Susieall2012, I'm sorry that you didn't contact "VRT" in reaction to commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Files related to Zoe Longfield. The copyright status of the photographs showing her seems to have complexities; but if you are the copyright holder of her paintings (and I have no reason to doubt this) and were willing to contact VRT, then you could have the files of the paintings "undeleted" (restored) and indeed would be able to upload files of other works by her, and without risk of another deletion. -- Hoary (talk) 22:15, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
