Tamima bint Yusuf ibn Tashfin (Arabic: تميمة بنت يوسف بن تاشفين) was an Almoravid princess, she was a woman of letters and a political leader,[1] who contributed to the development of the Almoravid movement.[1] She was the daughter of Yusuf ibn Tashfin[2] (r.1060-1106) and his wife Zaynab an-Nafzawiyyah,[2] and the full-blooded sister of her father's successor Ali ibn Yusuf[2] (r.1106-1142).

Life[edit]

Tamima was known by the nickname Oum Talha (Talha's mother).[1][3] She lived in Fez,[1] and according to some sources she resided in Andalusia at some point in her life.[1] Tamima received a literary education[4] and could recite poetry.[4] She managed her finances herself[1] and closely watched her employees and accountants,[1] discussing her affairs with them to the smallest detail.[1] One of her secretaries happened to had fallen in love with her and confessed his love to her.[4] Tamima responded to him with a line of poetry reminding him of the class difference that separate them.[4]
