Ānanda
[edit]- ... that Ānanda became the Buddha's attendant, on the condition he would never receive any material benefits from it? Source: "When the Buddha signified that he desired to have Ānanda, the latter agreed to accept the post on certain conditions. The Buddha was never to give him any choice food or garment gotten by him, nor appoint for him a separate "fragrant cell" (residence), nor include him in the invitations accepted by the Buddha. For, he said, if the Buddha did any of these things, some would say that Ānanda's services to the Buddha were done in order to get clothes, good fare and lodging and be included in the invitations". (Malalasekera 1960); Source: "One one hand Ānanda requested not to receive any extra benefits as a result of his position, such as choice clothes or food, separate lodgings, or the inclusion in the invitations accepted by the Buddha". (Keown 2004, p.12)
- ALT1:... that when Ānanda said to his teacher, the Buddha, that spiritual friendship is half of the holy life, the Buddha disagreed? Source: "When Ānanda came to the Buddha and said that ... good friendship is half the holy life, the Master [the Buddha] corrected him and said that good friendship is the entire holy life ... " (Bodhi 2013, p.394); "In one sutta, Ananda suggests to the Buddha that having good friends is half the holy life. The Buddha disagrees, saying rather that 'good friendship, good companionship, good association are the entire holy life' ..." (Shaw 2006, p.12)
- ALT2:... that Ānanda, the Buddha's attendant, was instrumental in establishing the Buddhist order of nuns? "Ananda, a cousin of the Buddha, ... accompanied the Buddha during the last stage of his life and persuaded him to admit women into the Sangha, thus establishing the Bhikkhuni Sangha, the female Buddhist monastic community". (Violatti 2013)
- ALT3:... that Buddhist texts relate that Ānanda attained enlightenment halfway between standing and lying down? Source: "Ananda ... made repeated attempts to progress, but was so unsuccessful that he gave up and admitted failure the day before the meeting. That night, he gained enlightenment while getting into bed: this was, according to the commentators, technically neither the lying-down nor the standing posture. (Shaw 2006, pp.17-8)
- ALT4:... that the German composer Richard Wagner wrote an opera about Ānanda, the Buddha's attendant? "Burnouf's book marks the true beginning of Western research on Buddhist texts from India. Wagner read this most important work ... and came across the legend that inspired him to the Victors project". (App 2011, p.33)

- Article was promoted to GA-status, and was nominated in due time. It is long enough, neutral and cites sources inline. "Earwig's Copyvio Detector" reports no significant text similarities. I prefer the ALT4 hook: Hook is well-formatted. It is interesting, and neutral. Its fact is sourced inline. QPQ was done. The image is ©-free under İndian law. Good to go.
