Abraham Lincoln's patent

[edit]

Patent Model of Abraham Lincoln's Invention

  • ... that Abraham Lincoln was the only U.S. president to have a registered patent to an invention (pictured)?

Created/expanded by Doug Coldwell (talk), 7&6=thirteen (talk). Nominated by Doug Coldwell (talk) at 16:07, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Every thing checks out, and it's an interesting article, but what is Abraham Lincoln Online.org? Is it a reliable source? It's not needed for the hook, because another reliable source backs up the claim. Jayjg (talk) 03:20, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Removed Abraham Lincoln Online.org from lede paragraph as there are several other reliable sources to show hook. Are we good to go now?--Doug Coldwell talk 12:15, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Good to go now. Jayjg (talk) 16:34, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Close paraphrasing concerns. Example: "on his way home to Illinois one time between sessions of Congress in 1848, the boat Lincoln was on became stranded on a sandbar. The captain had the crew collect all the loose planks, empty barrels, and strong wooden boxes to force them under the sides of the boat" vs "On his way home to Illinois his boat became stranded on a sandbar. As Herndon told the story, "The captain ordered the hands to collect all the loose planks, empty barrels and boxes and force them under the sides of the boat". Nikkimaria (talk) 04:44, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Reworded to read now:
Lincoln's law partner and biographer, William H. Herndon, also reports an additional incident at the time of a boat Lincoln was on of getting stranded on a shoal. The boat gradually swung clear and became free after much work by the crew.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:43, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, but that was only an example of problematic phrasing in this article. The article needs to be thoroughly checked against sources to eliminate these types of problems. Another example: "Lincoln's last patent case, Dawson v. Ennis, occurred after his presidential nomination, but before his election. Lincoln won the election but his client lost the case" vs "Lincoln argued his last patent case, Dawson v. Ennis, after his nomination for President, but before his election. Although Lincoln won the election, his client lost the case". Nikkimaria (talk) 00:30, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Article has been completely re-worded.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:02, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for addressing the problems. You've got some WP:MOS and grammar problems, but the article is probably now good enough for DYK. Nikkimaria (talk) 15:07, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I'll continue to improve the article. I'll get some good copyeditors to work on it also. Does that mean I have a "tick" again? Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 15:50, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Improved the article as suggested by TonyThe Tiger. Was able to get some other editors to improve with copyediting.--Doug Coldwell talk 21:30, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Do I need a "re-tick" for the promoting editor? Unless, of course, you are that editor.--Doug Coldwell talk 21:30, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
