Bandos (horse)[edit]

Created by Horsegeek (talk). Self-nominated at 00:22, 16 May 2019 (UTC).

  • I suggest proposing new hooks as I don't think either appeals to a broad audience. The first seems too niche and I think only horse racing fans might appreciate it. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 03:44, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
It still feels very niche and doesn't appeal to non horse enthusiasts. Can you try proposing something with broader appeal? The reference to a "Queen of Poland" or the number of the horses he foaled might work better. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:35, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Narutolovehinata5 I tweaked the first hook to say how many horses he foaled, would that work better? Can’t really think of any other interesting facts. Horsegeek(talk) 02:28, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, the first hook is probably the best bet. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 04:46, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
  • I apologize for the delay in reviewing this as I have been busy with other editing matters. The article meets DYK requirements for newness and length, no close paraphrasing was found, and a QPQ has been done. For the reasons I've mentioned above, I have struck ALT1 and ALT2. I checked the source for ALT0 but it doesn't seem to explicitly mention the hook fact: can you confirm if the source does indeed say what ALT0 says? Finally, some paragraphs and statements in the article lack footnotes. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 23:39, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
  • Not a problem, Narutolovehinata5. I added the other ref that states the last part, thanks for catching that. Although I'm not too worried about the footnotes. Horsegeek(talk) 21:32, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek
@Horsegeek: On DYK however, as much as possible, all paragraphs should have at least one reference, ideally at the end of the paragraph. While as far as I know it's not technically against the rules to have unsourced statements, in the past, nominations have been put on hold or even rejected due to inadequate citations. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 23:34, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

I believe I have resolved the issue Narutolovehinata5. Apologizes for the the late response. Horsegeek(talk) 19:07, 23 June 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek

@Horsegeek: Thank you. However, the statement "One of his most notable are Eukaliptus, who's dam was the Comet daughter, Eunice." lacks a reference. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 23:22, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5:, source has been added. Horsegeek(talk) 15:05, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek
Thank you. @Horsegeek:. However, there has to be a footnote after the "Bandos sired 129 foals during his years in Poland, most of which went on to become champions themselves." sentence because that's the source of the main hook fact. I will approve this once this is done. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:02, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
Thank you again Narutolovehinata5 for patiently guiding me through this one. Footnotes are something I'm still quite new at, and I added one after the sentence, but I'm not completely sure what is supposed to be included in the footnote? Could you double check it to see if that is what you meant? If not, please correct my mistake and I'll do my best to fix it. :) Horsegeek(talk) 19:53, 25 June 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek
@Horsegeek: What is meant is that there needs to be a reference that confirms the fact in the sentence (i.e. the source for the information about the sires). The reference I think is actually already in the article, the reference just needs to be duplicated. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 01:15, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
I tried my hand at it again @Narutolovehinata5:. Is that correct? Horsegeek(talk) 02:20, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek
Yeah I think that should do it. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:30, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
@Horsegeek: In the article it states "Bandos sired 129 foals during his years in Poland, most of which went on to become champions themselves." but I cannot find the second part of this information in the source. Can you check please. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:48, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
@Horsegeek: Could you respond please? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:32, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
My apologizes, Cwmhiraeth. I haven't had the time to get on and do this and I'm going to be busy for a little while more, so I think it would be best if I cancelled this nomination. Thank you! Horsegeek(talk) 21:55, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Horsegeek
  • Replacing tick as I have rephrased the paragraph I was concerned about. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:22, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this and started reading the article. In the lead, Bandos's father is referred to as a stud and also as "her". The second sentence under "Life and career" seems to be missing some words: He was sired by Negatiw, who was by the Skowronek son, Naseem, and out of the Polish-bred mare, Bandola. I also added a tag to two sentences; are we talking about Bandos here, or another horse? The reference section should be expanded with the publishers' names and dates of publication.
  • I'm willing to promote ALT0, but it is going to be of interest only to those who follow the Derby (at first, I thought you were referring to the Kentucky Derby). It might make a fun hook to play around with the horses' names, like:
  • ALT3: ... that The King of Janow and the Queen of Poland produced a real stud? Yoninah (talk) 19:58, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
  • The nominator has not edited on Wikipedia since July 14, the date of their last post. I really don't want to close this nomination if a good hook can be found for it. Cwmhiraeth what do you think of my ALT3? Yoninah (talk) 23:05, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
  • I have clarified the article where required. I don't like the use of "real stud" in ALT3 and it's not correct anyway, so how about ALT4?
  • ALT4: ... that in 1982, the "King of Janow", son of the Queen of Poland, came to live in California?
  • ALT4a: ... that in 1982, the "King of Janow" came to live in California? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:52, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
  • @Cwmhiraeth: Thanks! I love both hooks. Both are verified and cited inline. Rest of review above. Both ALT4 and ALT4a good to go; leaving it up to the promoter to decide. Yoninah (talk) 12:54, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
I've added quotation marks to "King of Janow" to reflect its use in the article (and also because it was merely a nickname as opposed to the horse's real name), although this change can be reverted if other editors find this to be unnecessary. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 15:57, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
