Big Sur Land Trust[edit]

  • ... that the Big Sur Land Trust pioneered the “conservation buyer” method of preserving land by offering owners economic incentive to sell land at below-market rates, protecting around 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) since 1978? Source: "According to Zad Leavy, the trust’s longtime executive director, BSLT pioneered the “conservation buyer” method ..." The Land of Big Sur: Conservation on the California Coast page 15; "Since its founding in 1978, the mission of the Land Trust has been to conserve significant lands and waters of California’s Central Coast. The result: about 40,000 acres of magnificent land is undisturbed." About Us: Big Sur Land Trust

  • The hook is over 200 characters, and very wordy. Could you come up with a sharper hook? Yoninah (talk) 23:10, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Suggested ALT1: ...that the Big Sur Land Trust pioneered the “conservation buyer” method in 1978 to protect around 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) in Big Sur by giving owners an incentive to sell land at below-market rates?btphelps (talk to me) (what I've done) 18:03, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
  • @Btphelps: Thank you. Would you consider cutting that down more to make a hook, instead of revealing the article?
  • ALT1a: ... that in 1978 the Big Sur Land Trust pioneered the "conservation buyer" method to protect around 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) of land? Yoninah (talk) 22:43, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Full review needed now that hook is set. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:39, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
  • New enough, long enough, neutrally written, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. ALT1a hook ref verified and cited inline. QPQ done. Since I just cut down the hook from the author's original, I'm going ahead and approving this. ALT1a good to go. Yoninah (talk) 22:00, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Pulled from prep area - hook fact does not tally up with article. Hook says 1978, article 1989. Might just be a typo, but I'm worried about the fact checking for this to be missed. Harrias talk 13:47, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
  • The trust was founded in 1978. It has preserved 40,000 acres since it's founding. The conservation buyer method was first implemented in 1989. The rewritten hook conflates the two. Possible alternative:
ALT1b ...that the Big Sur Land Trust pioneered the "conservation buyer" method to protect land on California's central coast?
  • IMO removing all the numbers from the hook leaves it a little limp. I suggest removing the year:
  • ALT1c: ... that the Big Sur Land Trust pioneered the "conservation buyer" method to protect around 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) of land on the California coast? Yoninah (talk) 20:31, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
  • But, as far as I can tell, the "conservation buyer" method itself was just one of the methods used in order to protect around 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) of land; whereas the hook implies that all of the land was protected by that method. Harrias talk 21:56, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Harrias, you're correct, the conservation buyer method was not used for all 40,000 acres. How about this more generic statement?
ALT1d ...that the Big Sur Land Trust pioneered the "conservation buyer" method of preserving land, saving thousands of acres in Big Sur from possible development?
While the "thousands of acres" is not supported by a specific citation, the fact is supported by the numbers of acres acquired by the trust since 1989. The use of the so-called "conservation buyer" method is not specifically referred to in any of the purchases, but implied. For example, the 2016 sale by Clint Eastwood of the Odello East property employed this method. Otherwise you just have to leave out any reference to the amount of land. — btphelps (talk to me) (what I've done) 21:40, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
@Yoninah: Are you happy with ALT1d? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:28, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
  • Yes. The first part of the hook is verified by footnote 1, and the second part by adding up the land holdings in the chart, which are all sourced. I tweaked the hook. ALT1d good to go. Yoninah (talk) 14:00, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
