Carlton le Willows Academy[edit]

Improved to Good Article status by Curlymanjaro (talk). Self-nominated at 21:22, 6 June 2019 (UTC).

  • recently promoted to GA, no copyvio, long enough, well cited, no plagiarism concerns. May not need QPQ? Primary hook is awkwardly worded and not cited in the article; ALT1 is not especially interesting.Kenirwin/(talk) 23:30, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
  • Guess you're right, although I did quite like ALT1. How about this:
  • ALT2:... that Carlton le Willows Academy was opened in 1956 by Sir John Wolfenden, whose report, first recommending the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Britain, was published a year later? Source: Association of Education Committees (1956). British Education Index. Vol. 108. London: Councils and Education Press. p. 1000. OCLC 225906831.
@Curlymanjaro: ALT2 works for me. Needs QPQ review -- please complete a review and note it here. -Kenirwin/(talk) 15:30, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
  • @Kenirwin: The nominator hasn't been active since the end of July. Where do things stand right now with this nomination? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:06, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
  • @Narutolovehinata5: - I'm good letting it go; it was a struggle to find something that worked, and no QPQ - Kenirwin/(talk) 00:18, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
I just checked and a QPQ is still needed for this nomination. Since the nominator is currently inactive, Kenirwin would it be okay for you if I donate a QPQ in their stead, or would you prefer waiting for them? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:42, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: - that's a great solution --thank you! -Kenirwin/(talk) 00:51, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
@Kenirwin: Thanks. I'll be donating my review of Template:Did you know nominations/Stephen Shing-Toung Yau. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:53, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT2 isn't stated in the text, it simply says that Wolfenden gave a speech at the opening. There is no mention of his report. Felixkrater (talk) 06:57, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
  • I can't see how the information about the report, needed for ALT2, could be included in the article - it came out the following year, so unless it was widely known that he was chairing the committee (and neither the article about Wolfenden nor the article about the report say anything about that), it would not have been relevant to the opening of the school.
This may be considered boring for a school, but the only thing that strikes me in the article about the school is the section about some of the former pupils. I wonder if a hook like the following might work?
ALT3 ... that Carlton le Willows Academy alumni include cricketer Mark Footitt, Air Supply singer/guitarist Graham Russell and balloonist Janet Folkes?
or
ALT4 ... that Carlton le Willows Academy nurtured half of a soft rock romantic duo and a balloonist?
Not all schools have former students who have designed bicycles or flown balloons, so maybe something along those lines would be interesting? RebeccaGreen (talk) 22:46, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
I'm more partial to ALT3 since I'm familiar with Air Supply and am aware of how popular they are, though I'm not sure what other editors may think about it. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:40, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
I have struck ALT2, as it's not supported by the article. I think we need a new reviewer to check the ALT3 and ALT4 hooks, and approve one - or possibly suggest others ... (ALT4 is probably too obscure - Air Supply is in that hook too, but only as "half of a soft rock romantic duo"!) RebeccaGreen (talk) 10:41, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
ALT3 I reviewed only the hook points per article sources, and all names have sources. I could only get to two of them, but I'll AGF for Janet Folkes, who is behind a paywall. Sam Beeton source is broken for me, both the original and the archived version; I tried the wayback machine and couldn't get it there either. I tried to find a replacement via google with no joy; all sources I found are suspect. If someone can fix that or just remove it from the hook, I can approve that hook. On a related note, the references in this article are kind of a mess. Looks like the reviewer has 23 edits total. I'm not worried about it for DYK but I am a little concerned about the GA status. I've noted it at the article talk. --valereee (talk) 11:34, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Hi Valereee, Sam Beeton is not in the hook - I wonder if you meant Graham Russell? The source for that is his autobio on the Air Supply website, so not independent, but he does say he "attended Carlton Le Willows Technical School until I was 17". Janet Folkes I should be able to check, as I have access to The Times digital archives through the National Library of Australia - unfortunately, it's being very slow right now (don't know why, it's the middle of the night here). Alan Oakley will have to come out of the hook - he went to Chandos Street Boys’ School, and left long before it amalgamated with Carlton Le Willows in 1973. Mark Footitt's source is OK and confirms he went there. I will get back to you again when I've been able to check Janet Folkes' obit, and will see if I can find reliable sources for any other alumni who could replace Oakley in the hook. RebeccaGreen (talk) 17:02, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
RebeccaGreen, I'm so sorry, I must have had a brain fart once I got to the article and just started checking the ones that were all in a row! I'm an idiot sometimes! Just ping me when you're ready! --valereee (talk) 17:18, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Valereee, there seems to be a problem with The Times digital archives - other digital databases that the NLA provides access to are working, but although I can bring up the search result for Janet Folkes' obituary, neither the article nor the page will load. I think we can AGF, as a google search for ' "Janet Folkes" "Carlton le Willows" ' does bring up that same obituary. I haven't found any other names that we can add to the hook, so ALT3 has just 3 names of alumni. RebeccaGreen (talk) 14:19, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
No worries, we can totally AGF on that. Maybe that's why it wasn't working for me, either, it seems like I can usually get to that.
