Dave Pickerell[edit]

Created by Power~enwiki (talk). Self-nominated at 20:18, 9 November 2018 (UTC).

  • Article is new enough and long enough. Can't access #2 so no comment on it. #3 does not call Pickerell the "vice president". I am not certain that "Pickerell founded Oak View Spirits, where he consulted for more than 100 distilleries" in the source can be put as "established a consulting firm called Oak View Spirits, where he advised over 100 other distilleries." in the article. Is gardenandgun a reliable source? No QPQ needed. Didn't notice any copyvio or close paraphrase. Hook is reliable and supported in article, the other linked article is so-so and can we assume that people will find it interesting? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 14:47, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
  • Not quite sure what you mean by #2, I assume you mean the Google Book link for "Bourbon and Bullets". "Vice President" is in the NYTimes obit (and "Bourbon and Bullets"); whiskey people called him Master Distiller. I'm not sure that the distinction between the corporate title and the distilling role is important enough. Regarding "Oak View Spirits", it certainly was a consulting firm; I can find additional sources if you think the existing ones aren't sufficient. Garden & Gun is an interview with him, it's been a (US) national magazine for a decade so should be reliable, at least as to what Pickerell said. I did not think to check Johnny Appleseed for quality, if it's not in bold it doesn't need to be perfect. power~enwiki (π, ν) 21:24, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
  • @Power~enwiki: Currently the article is not long enough for DYK – I have the length at about 1,400 characters. 97198 (talk) 11:45, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
  • You are correct; I've expanded it to about 1600 chars. I don't have anything more to say on the subject; if it's still too short this will have to be closed. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:07, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
  • With the sources you have, you can surely flesh out the text more than "he worked here" and "he worked there". I already added more from the sources. For readers who have no idea who Johnny Appleseed is, I think a better hook lies in the description of the whiskey he made for the rock band. Yoninah (talk) 20:26, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
  • I don't want a hook based on Metallica. Apart from his own interviews, I don't see the detail in sources to expand this article further. As I'm about to disappear from the internet for two weeks, I think I'll just withdraw this. power~enwiki (π, ν) 16:40, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
  • @Power~enwiki: I came to close this, but what's wrong with a hook about Metallica? That might be of interest to a lot of readers. @Yoninah: Would it be okay to stick with the Johnny Appleseed hook if it was the only option? I'm aware it's not that well-known outside of the U.S., but then again, so is a lot of our hook material, and we've certainly had hooks about even more obscure subjects. • (no response planned until Monday January 7, though I really wouldn't mind if this just disappeared entirely) power~enwiki (π, ν) 00:48, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
    • The main reason is that it seems a bit too promotional. Beyond that, several blogs suggested that sound treating whiskey might be a gimmick. power~enwiki (π, ν) 04:53, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: Final ping for your thoughts on the request for closure. If you agree or there is no response soon, I will close this. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 05:58, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
  • I'm willing to go with the Johnny Appleseed hook because Johnny is linked (although he will probably get more clicks than Dave). However, the sources call him the Johnny Appleseed of craft distilling, not whiskey, so this is how I'd phrase it:
  • ALT0a: ... that Dave Pickerell was known as the "Johnny Appleseed" of craft distilling?
  • Craft distilling might also be linked to Microdistillery. Yoninah (talk) 22:04, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
  • That's fine. I don't have the time or interest to do anything more. If further involvement is necessary to continue this process, consider this withdrawn. power~enwiki (π, ν) 18:35, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Thank you. Restoring tick for ALT0a per Jo-Jo Eumerus' review. Yoninah (talk) 00:27, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
