Death of Leelah Alcorn

[edit]
  • Reviewed: Darejan Dadiani
  • Comment: To appear on December 28, anniversary of her death.

Improved to Good Article status by Midnightblueowl (talk). Nominated by Rainbow unicorn (talk) at 04:58, 2 November 2015 (UTC).

  • Oh, what a tragedy! Very well written GA article long and posted by due date. Hook is also interesting, cite and verified. No copy vio detected. Text is neutral. QPQ done. Good to go.Nvvchar. 07:59, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Linked article should have been bolded in the hook. Fixed. Bcp67 (talk) 21:58, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • How about her birthday on November 15? December 28 is a little too far ahead in time. Usually there is a cap of 6 weeks on how long we can wait. --PFHLai (talk) 03:06, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
PFHLai, If December 28 is too far, then December 10 (Human Rights Day), to me her birthday would be the least fitting day given the topic of the article. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 19:44, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
OK. I've moved this nom to T:TDYK#Special occasion holding area. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 21:44, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
How about Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20? --PFHLai (talk) 01:14, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
PFHLai, that seems like a better day to have it, I support changing it to then, thank you. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 22:07, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, but I've pulled the nomination because the hook leaves me uncomfortable for reasons stated on WT:DYK. Specific details of person taking their own life are not what I would consider suitable main page material. How about a hook that focuses on tributes or vigils, preferably something a little unusual? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:16, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

The Golden Globe dedication seems like an interesting tidbit for a hook. How would ALT1: "...that after the death of Leelah Alcorn, Transparent writer Jill Soloway dedicated the series' Golden Globe Award to her?" read? GRAPPLE X 14:48, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment: I think any mention of a person's suicide shows incredibly poor taste. Why not say something more positive instead, like: ALT2: " ... that some commentators credit Leelah Alcorn with inspiring "a flashpoint for transgender progress in 2014"? (source). Let me know what you think. -- Notecardforfree (talk) 15:48, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
  • I think ALT2 is excellent hook material. It hits the objectives of being a) interesting/intriguing and b) commemorating Lelah's life (which is why this was delayed to a specific day). --Errant (chat!) 15:53, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
  • I think thinking that any mention of a person's suicide in a hook for an article about their suicide shows incredibly poor taste, shows incredibly poor taste. This nomination has been up for over two weeks, it could have easily been put up two days ago, imagine what that would have caused? I'm guessing most people commenting on this probably wouldn't have noticed an "issue" then, an "oh" at most. Funny how big "problems" can seem when you shine a light at them. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 22:04, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
  • To help with consensus, I support the main hook (prefer this) and ALT1, and oppose ALT2. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 22:28, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
  • The original hook is poorly sourced and, to be honest, not that intriguing (transgender girl rejects birth name). ALT2 is very positive, in the context of Transgender remembrance day, and hooks the reader to asking "why?". --Errant (chat!) 23:04, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
  • We have run plenty of hooks about death, so I don't understand the fuss here. But I support ALT2, as it ties in with Transgender Day of Remembrance, in case no other mention is made of that date on the main page. Yoninah (talk) 13:26, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
  • I'm fine with ALT2 if that's what most prefer, so someone can prepare this now, thank you. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 21:37, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: would you be able to put this back in the relevant queue to appear on Transgender Day of Remembrance, GTG with ALT2. --Errant (chat!) 22:00, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

@ErrantX: I've put it back in prep. I could have done it sooner had the nominator not objected to it! To get it to hit on 20 November requires putting in Queue 4, which means something already in the queue will have to go - I suggest asking what on WT:DYK.
