Dippy (Diplodocus carnegii)[edit]

Mounting of a cast of Dippy; Paris, 1908
Mounting of a cast of Dippy; Paris, 1908
  • ... that Dippy is the most famous dinosaur skeleton in the world?
Source: Ulrich Merkl 2015, p. 78: “Although it narrowly failed to win the race with the New York Museum of Natural History in 1905, the Diplodocus carnegii is the most famous dinosaur skeleton today, due to the large number of casts in museums around the world”
Breithaupt, 2013, p.49: ““Dippy” was and still is the most widely seen and best-known dinosaur ever found.”

  • Comment: Hold off on DYK until the article name change proposal is settled. David notMD (talk) 17:47, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
  • Review: The terminology "dinosaur skeleton" is not correct, as it is a composite of even different genera. "most popular dinosaur cast" may be better, but this needs to be solved before DYK publication. Tisquesusa (talk) 23:30, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
I suggest we follow the sources as to terminology. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:46, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Full review needed; article name change is completed. Theramin's question above will need to addressed by the eventual reviewer, since copied material, if previously existing on Wikipedia for long enough, can bring with it 5x requirements. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:15, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
  • @Onceinawhile: This article is new enough and long enough and I couldn't see that much had been copied from other articles. The image is in the public domain, the hook facts are cited inline, the article is neutral and I detected no copyright issues. There are several paragraphs with no citations and these will need to be added before this can go ahead. A QPQ has been done. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:26, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth: thank you for your review. I have made a few copy edits and added references throughout where they were missing. Onceinawhile (talk) 12:16, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Thank you. This is now good to go. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:01, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
  • @Tisquesusa:@David notMD: one source calls it the most famous "dinosaur skeleton", another calls it the most famous "dinosaur". Would it work to phrase the hook:
  • ALT0a: ... that Dippy is the most famous dinosaur in the world? Yoninah (talk) 19:24, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Comment My opinion is that "skeleton" is needed, as many would argue that T rex is more famous as a dinosaur. David notMD (talk) 01:42, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
That was my thinking as well. Onceinawhile (talk) 05:58, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
  • OK, thank you. Restoring tick for original hook per Cwmhiraeth's review. Yoninah (talk) 11:18, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
