User:The C of E, I don't get the hook. What is the antecedent of the last "he"? Because no one in the article calls someone else a bastard, though two different policemen infer that Bastard was a bastard. Then there's the matter of the piping of the name--"this bastard" should be "this Bastard", of course. Besides that, the article is new enough and long enough, and I see no plagiarism. OK, It's supposed to read that Aussies refused to call Ebbo a Bastard by refusing to say his last name, but that Bastard (he) was happy to tell a policeman that he (Bastard) was a Bastard. I didn't capitalise it as it was for April Fools Day. Does that help @Drmies:? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 18:17, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

  - But that's not in the article, as far as I can see. User:EEng, you've dealt with April 1 DYKs--can we mess around with capitals in this way? Sorry C of E, but the more I look at it, the more I'm troubled by the grammar: the press didn't refuse to call him "a bastard"; they refused to call him "Bastard"--it's not just a capital, it's an article too. @Drmies: It is in the article where it says he gave his name and the policeman thought he was just being rude. Plus it clearly says in WP:DYKAPRIL that grammar can be ignored for April Fools day hooks. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 19:01, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

But he didn't call the cop a bastard, so that invalidates the second part of the hook. Sorry, but someone else will have to deal with the hook, maybe EEng; I'm not comfortable with judging something when I don't know which rules are out and which are still in. While DYK hooks in general aren't supposed to mislead -- they should be literally true -- they are allowed to puzzle the reader, so that he'll click; but on April 1 there's a lot more leeway -- it's OK for the reader to discover on clicking that he was misled by some pun or substitution. I think, though, that this one tries too hard and might be better as a regular DYK along the lines of

ALT1 ... that radio announcers didn't want to name Ebbo Bastard over the air, so they just referred to him as "Smith"?

No, I don't like that one as it is certainly not april foolsy. I think if the policeman bit is the problem @EEng: then very simply we'll just do:

It wasn't meant to be april foolsy. I said I think this article would be better as a regular DYK. Your Alt2 is acceptable for April 1 but to be honest I don't think it's that great. E Eng 19:38, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

ALT4 ... that few Australians believed a South African was more of a bastard than Jardine.
ALT5 ... that the bastard outflanked the husband and got shot dead on Valentine's Day.
